Also, have spent the whole day thinking it was Wednesday, because I had Monday off for AL and it's thrown me off.

Friday tomorrow :datass:

I one had to explain to someone from senior management to find out the VAT of a value you don't just calculate 20% of that value.

Is that adding or subtracting vat?

Essentially they wanted to know the same value as if you were subtracting - ie how much of the value was made up of vat (so 1/6th not 1/5th, since we're starting with the value that includes VAT)

Less than a week to my interview now, I think my manager might have guessed the reason for my day off next week. He asked for a chat yesterday and showed me messages where he asked the CEO to give me a pay rise based on my recent performance, which was 'agreed' as long as a certain customer pays their bill (I headed up the creation of a few reports which were used in a meeting between the two CEOs - which apparently was the best meeting they ever had, and I've been getting a decent amount of praise for my work). Didn't say how much the raise would be, how much of the bill needs to be paid, or how quickly after the payment I'd get a raise. Which is standard practice, depressingly. Still, not the worst conversation.

I applied for a job a few weeks back, a full-time remote writer position at a software developer with some really innovative work practices: 30 hour weeks (paid full time), unlimited annual leave, truly flexible hours, company paid trips to Australia etc etc. As the process went on they were super transparent about the whole thing, telling everyone who applied exactly what was going on.

For the 3 roles they had advertised they had nearly 6000 applications, and I made it down to the last 27 for the writer's role.

I was supposed to have a call with the founder this morning, a quick 5 minute chat so he could see if I'd fit in with their culture, but of strawberry floating course my internet gooseberry fools the bed. We manage to get a few exchanges on the subject of cheese out of the way before he's cutting out every five seconds. Still, he's given me the benefit of the doubt so I'm through to the next stage which is some writing tests.

It's a weird feeling. I've earned my way to the next stage on the strength of my initial application, but I really wanted some facetime with the guy to chat.

Oh well. Positive thoughts.

Thanks man. I was absolutely shitting it beforehand and when 1) Firefox blocked my camera and I had no idea how to unblock it then 2) switching to my phone the thing wouldn't stay connected for more than 30 seconds, I felt a real rising panic that I had to force down into my gut. I'm still on the comedown now, feel like I'm completely full of adrenaline.

It's probably a good sign if your cheese game alone got you through to the next stage!

Sounds good Taf, good luck! And these things happen even on regular business calls I have with a company that specialises in AI so wouldn't beat yourself up about the technical issues of the call.

I like to think that Taf is a Reblochon man.

Also nice one and good luck with the writing tests!

That was literally the only question that he asked. I answered that we go to a farmer's market every weekend where there's a stall specialising in goats cheese. They have something just called The Brick which is a, yes, a brick of super creamy, super strong goats milk cheese which is incredible.

Also, compte.

Writing tests are coming in 8 days apparently, so we'll see what they are then!

Awful cheese answer, I wouldn't hire you.

This post is exempt from the No Context Thread.

Did you hear about the fire at the French cheese factory?

There was debris everywhere!
