Why and when did society decide that management should be having a go at people and not positively reinforcing what they're doing. I'm yet to find someone who is actually good at managing people (although my experience is limited).

We are having an IT upgrade in a few weeks and are all going to be getting a laptop. But they are changing the networks as well which is going to mean utter chaos when everyone arrives in the office on the Monday morning. I am not in that day so hopefully I will manage to avoid the worst of the problems that are bound to happen.

Yeah this is going to be a disaster. We just had to watch a video where the IT guy presented what the new environment will look like. We are going from Windows 7 to Windows 10 but due to the network changes, we will have to run a virtual PC in order to access half of the programs we use. Because that's not going to be annoying.

Still, it should mean we can all work from home, so that will be a nice option in future. It will be annoying to have to pause my game/movie to send a "see, I am working, honest!" email though.

Our lot are laying off internal IT support staff, outsourcing, and upgrading multisite infrastructure (currently mostly using different stuff) all at the same time.

Yeah IT upgrades are never the smoothest, even if you have a gooseberry fool hot team working on it who have done a hell of a lot of work in preparing and de-risking the situation there are always going to be a few bumps in the road! With a bad team (or no real team at all!) it can be truly disastrous!

I've managed infrastructure transitions and upgrades for small teams in the past and even when only dealing with a handful of people, system, and tools it was still a nightmare.

To do so, get a big clock and put a laser mouse on top of it. As the second had passes under the mouse it should move the cursor enough to register movement and keep the session alive

You can actually get genuine USB "mouse jigglers" - things you shove in a USB port that pretend to be a mouse and register random input.

I understand they are used by nefarious people who steal unlocked laptops and want to prevent the session from locking so they can do stuff to it without a password!

My manager is cool. Lots of positive reinforcement and recognition, and since she took over from our old manager, she has managed to get us quality of life improvements (such as switching to laptops from desktops, thereby allowing us to do our rota'd weekends at home instead of having to go to the office), and she's willing to get stuck in with our work if we end up short-staffed for any reason, or our workload suddenly increases (as it can do during a sales event).

The unions have not finalised things yet but I have seen the provisional agreement following the restoration of Stormont and it looks like parity with the NHS in England and the following rise in the next year will result in me getting a raise of approximately 17-18%. I will also be receiving back pay for the new scale back to last April, so that's this year's holiday paid for.

When I worked with a shitty manager who wouldn't muck in I always remembered her as being a total arse. We've been assaulted and need a break but were short staffed and you're swanning off to the gym and getting coffee because with your feet up. strawberry float right off. So now I'm a manager I make a point of helping out. I answer call bells and jump on the floor if we're short because it builds trust and supportive relationships. I know if I have to ask any of my staff to bail me out they will because I show the same compassion for their crisis.
