Sat with a colleague yesterday who returned from Italy about 10 days ago. Obviously lots of people were cautious and were adding management what was going to happen, would be self isolate, work from a different location, etc. He shared with me that when he rung in the boss said that it's just bring overblown by the media :fp:

You know the thing about you have to be a sociopath to be a successful CEO? I genuinely think we've got a layer of management who are a mixture of sociopaths while being a bit on the spectrum as they really struggle to emphasise with other humans.

It's not hard to imagine there's a correlation between a lack of empathy and success in business.

Sysadmin peeps would you say it's normal for a shared hosting environment to go down for about 3 minutes every couple of days, for system reboots and stuff for like or should that be shouldered off to redundant servers even if it's just for a couple of minutes? I don't think I pay for failover IP or anything like that but it would be nice. I guess that could be the 0.1% downtime most hosts mention in their T&Cs.

Only noticed because Wordpress jet pack notifies me when my site is down, I'm slightly paranoid about it because my site went offline for 20 strawberry floating days when my host strawberry floated up which would have done a lot of damage. So I've moved over to them to another independent UK host that wasn't bought out by GoDaddy :dread:

GRcade goes down for a couple of minutes a day around 5am when we do our database backup so I guess it's not a big deal - but if it's really every day I would probably raise a ticket and ask what they're doing & why? At least then you'll know.

Thanks man, yup it's not big deal (Although our database is huge so that'll take some time), I can't remember whether I get backups included or not so that could be it. It does happen in the middle of the day sometimes though.

You never know when people are looking at stuff so yeah get a bit paranoid about it. May as well ask what sort of routine is happening there, feel weirdly guilty about it because I pay like £4 a month as that's all I can afford (that's right GRcade costs 10x what I spend on for my actual business :slol:).

It's a very useful tool having uptime monitoring (and it's free as well) through Wordpress.com (even though it's self hosted), I guess you just don't know otherwise when people are potentially getting a blank page. If you are for example paying money to drive clicks to your site that's not a good look.

Umming and Arring about applying for a new job at work.
Currently I'm a sole developer but with IT Ops, there are role going in "proper" dev part of the business and I can't decide wether to go for it.

The sensible thing to do is go for it as there is career progression and junk, but it would mean working on user stories for our systems and not building end to end solutions almost playing like I do now.

On one hand proper progression, being a "real" developer and learning to it all rights
On the other masses of freedom making all kinds of fun stuff but realistically no progression unless I want to give up on dev stuff entirly to move into server admin, maybe DevOps AWS stuff or management.

urgh toughy.

Aaaaaaaand I’m now working from home and it’s being reviewed each week.

Ordered a fire tv for my office as going to go a bit odd not talking to people in person as much.

Luckily I write code all day and I can do that just as well from home as my desk.

Same here, although I'm going in tomorrow to give someone a laptop and usb stick they'll need, so an hour each way for about 5 minutes.

I had a panic because I forgot to bring an ethernet cable home for my phone. Dad bought one over, went to buy another one to patch at Tesco and turns out both my other ethernet ports are not properly plugged in so I can't use them. Instead im going from wall to phone to pc in that order, cuts my speed by 60Mbps but it's still 100 so that aint bad at all.

Kind of glad I can avoid the office for a while, but I do wonder if I'll eventually get lonely.

If you've got a condition that will put you at serious risk, then you need to self isolate. I'm not sure how you resolve that with work, but you need to speak to your GP about getting a long term sick note for a few weeks until this blows over.

Speaking from experience I give it about a week until you start to talk to yourself and make tea every couple of minutes with an obvious sense of disappointment that no-one is in the kitchen. Or, you might absolutely love it and never return.

I have mixed feelings

I've been self-isolating for 5 years so yeah this doesn't really affect me or my work.
