The Work Thread 2 - Get back to work!

It's looking increasingly likely I'll be furloughed.

My predicament is that I work in a industry that won't recover in 2020 and will take years to get back to the state it was in a few months ago.

I was promised a pay rise and promotion come the next round (July), back in December. Multiple higher ups had promised me this in order to keep me happy/ with the company. Clearly that won't be happening now, and I'll be starting to update my cv as a precautionary measure.

My question is, what do people think is the best way to approach this in a CV? Does writing essentially the above info seem a bit disingenuous considering my job title will be the same? I'm frustrated in that even with the promotion my title will still have been below what I was actually doing in the company, meaning that if I do have to search for jobs my current title massively undervalues me.

Always include a byline in your CV of what you actually did in your last 3 relevant positions, most people know the title doesn't really mean gooseberry fool.

My official job title once was "online marketing specialist" that doesn't mean I still don't write in house web developer, video marketing strategist and IT technician because that's what I actually did, they literally just made that up on the spot to tell HMRC. I was their first employee so I had like 10 jobs it was insane.

Heck I've had people literally tell me they put a "lower" job title on their CV because they don't want to be misunderstood as middle management whom do no actual work.

Of course you're meant to expand on that in your covering letter / job application personal statement bit. There's always going to be 10:1 or more people who have the right job titles and qualifications on their CV but don't stand out in any way. That's your chance to demonstrate that your job title didn't matter and you did far more than was expected of you.

I honestly don't think good HR departments really care what your previous job titles have been provided you can demonstrate you fulfil the person specification having done most of those tasks before.

Thanks, of course I would include responsibilities etc. but even taking all that into account, I would reckon job title is taken into account when choosing a new hire. Plus it looks considerably better to have 2 promotions in as many years instead of one.

My director just called me to say he was making some changes to our accounts so if I could log out of the system while he did so.

I log back in after an hour and find that, for some reason that I can't even begin to fathom, he's overwritten all of our data with a week old backup.

All I can say is, thank strawberry float I've been making new back ups every single morning. Just had to restore all the lost data and redo all of this morning's work, including the new transactions the director posted but it looks like everything is back as it should be now.

I really can't even begin to imagine why he would have done that. It's not like you could even claim it was an accident

Um, the obvious reason there is that he doesn't want the new transactions he posted to show up in the accounts. Is there anything about them that's untoward?

That's really worried me actually. I know he was supposed to be getting management accounts and various other data ready to apply for these new government loans through our bank so perhaps he genuinely has doctored the accounts and then restored an old back up to remove any trace?

Surely he would get caught out if he's actually done anything like that? I don't even know who I'd report anything like that to, not that I have any actual proof of dodgy goings on.

So until this is all 100% over and we've all been vaccinated I do not want to go anywhere near an office. We already have people in our company who work 100% at home from further way, how do I request to be able to do this because I am not going to get on public transport until I know this is all fully over.

The good thing is speaking to colleagues it sounds like our bosses are also in the same boat as us and don't want us anywhere near the office at least for a while and we shut before the government told everyone to so hopefully they'll listen. We've all been working our asses off at home as well so we've shown it can work.

I think you place a formal request in stating your fears and that you can work from home without loss of productivity.

I’m finding the issue of double standards from the government on what’s allowed what isn’t allowed is making it difficult or vague in companies making a decision. Which then comes onto the population because realistically your work place could say you have to come into work for whatever reason.

I also hope that many companies allow staff to permanently work from home. I think the government could make a big dent in their carbon emissions targets by possibly incentivising companies to allow staff to work from home. If maybe 10-20% of people worked from home it would help congestion. Does anyone have any figures on the numbers of people working from home now?

We like to joke at work that each person seems to have their own catchphrases, or things they say really often and when it's pointed out to others it's like a lightbulb moment and you can't stop noticing it.

This is a curse I have, because I notice this gooseberry fool about people almost immediately and it drives me nuts. Every single person I work with, I could sit and do a pretty good approximation of their voice, mannerisms and the way they talk.
