For those of you on the forum who own their own company, I'd be really keen to speak with anyone who's prepared to give me any advice and guidance for the potential pitfalls I could look to avoid. Of particular interest is any start-up grants/support I might be eligible for.

Happy to go into detail privately with anyone who can spare me 15-20 mins to discuss.

Might not be quite what you're after but my boyfriend is getting advice and support on things like running a business and where to access finance and so on from a regional 'growth hub' in the north east, which is aimed at local high potential start-ups. It's part of a local enterprise partnership which is ultimately a government thing. There might be something where you are based that could meet some of your needs. I don't really know the ins and outs but it's been helpful for him and he got the impression it was undersubscribed.

The Growth Hubs are a great resource! I spent Sept 2019 - Sept 2020 working for the British Library's Business and IP Centre, so will definitely be returning to make the most of their resources.

I strawberry floating hate having to use customer EDI portals to submit sales invoices. Half the time they're strawberry floating gooseberry fool and constantly lose connection mid submission. One customer in particular, which I'm doing right now, would take half an hour if it worked seamlessly. But no, every page takes minutes to load and even crashes the browser at times so all in all, this thirty minute job will probably end up taking 2-3 hours. If I'm lucky!

Nothing I can do about it either because "the customer is always right"

Honestly makes me so strawberry floating angry.

We get made to do the stupidest gooseberry fool in support for that very reason. Working in services sucks. Customers can treat you like gooseberry fool and ask you impossible requests and you have to do it most of the time.

From personal experience, the customer is right about 10% of the time.

Zilnad,

Please refrain from criticising our customers online, it is not befitting of an employee from our company.

I'm on a call with a client and the client's people have started yelling at each other.

FFS. I've just copped a minor bollocking from a senior manager because I've been sort-of-secretly-but-not-really keeping three members of staff off the rota for coming to the office, because they don't want to due to the pandemic. She's clearly grassed me up immediately as I've then immediately received an email from the Director about it.

I replied to say I understand the issue of parity but I've got it under control and all we'll achieve if I'm forced to go to HR about it is extra sickness absence and potential disciplinary procedures. That's just essentially been ignored, so now I'm halfway through an email to HR providing a case summary of why these people aren't coming to the office.

That sounds like total bullshit - jobsworth behaviour from the senior manager.

Yeah that's bullshit, if you're dealing with it on your level and the only impact it's having is to keep those 3 members happy then why the hell should it be a problem?

Great to see Ob Bob finally rebel against the hierarchical structure in his job. 8-)

That is proper bullshit though. Government advice is if someone can work from home effectively then they should do so. Surely those employees and you are the best people to judge that at the level your management needs?

Well the only reason they can work from home is because other colleagues (same roles as them) are covering instead. They're all supposed to be on the rota. So I do understand the issue of fairness, but is it really that important compared with preventing people from suffering panic attacks/anxiety and everything that comes with that.

I've submitted the cases, so I guess I just wait to see what ruling comes back from HR.

There has recently been a notable shift in attitude. Not long ago many people were actively wanting to return to the office. Now that we're in the second wave, understandably there is a lot more resistance to it.

Personally, I've not wanted to return ever since we originally left in March!

Are you on this rota?

Presumably your place was fine when everyone was WFH so why isn't it now?

Yeah I'm on it. In tomorrow and Wednesday.

It was fine, until fairly recently when a core aspect of service required us to have a (limited) presence on-site.

Do the people covering them mind?

The worst type of managers are those that feel they have to seize every opportunity to extert their power whether it is warranted or not.

I have an actual space-cadet of a student this year. Getting him on task to do any work at all is a real struggle and talking to him it's like he's barely in the same postcode as you.

But yesterday they were doing a research task on acid rain, and he just seemed to get on with it. I could see his writing and it was focused, it was on point, it was actually quite funny. I genuinely thought maybe he'd turned a corner or this was a style of task that he really responded to.

Then I saw the last line of his paragraph was 'For more information, smash that 'like' button and subscribe for more videos'.

He was just transcribing a YouTube video and too much of a strawberry floating space slice to stop before the channel plug section.

Wouldn't be surprised if his final assessment includes a paragraph trying to get me to subscribe to Grammarly.com

It varies from person to person but not particularly. I suspect there is a small amount of grumbling going on in private that they have to go in but some others don't. I suppose at least if I get these through HR I will have a good reason why this is the case, rather than it having just been at my discretion.

The worst part of going in to the office, by a substantial margin, is the commute. It now feels so painful to spend £8 on a return train ticket, despite the fact I'm still saving a lot more than I used to when I would shell out for an annual pass. Not only that but it also feels like such a waste of time.
