Worth a try.

Work provides 7-days a week free accomodation but usually at the weekends I go home because obviously I prefer being there. But this weekend my boyfriend is coming down here so I don't have to make the 3.5 hour journey north and destroy a whole evening, arriving knackered and annoyed. I feel awake! I feel like I have an evening! What's better is we don't always have to do the overtime on Friday, depending on what is going on, and so today we only worked 8 hours instead of 10. I'm back at the flat right now.

Really need to get a job with normal hours and less away work.

My boss (who I hate) emailed me today and asked if I'd be willing to do set relief hours during the week (2 full days in addition to the half day I work on a Saturday) for the next 12 months. I mean, she's one of many, many reasons I reduced my hours, I don't enjoy the job, the atmosphere at work is toxic. But the main reason I can't is the full-time degree I'm doing means I just can't make that commitment. I politely declined and she has tried to make me feel guilty. I'm so glad I don't ever see her in person anymore so don't have to deal with her bullshit manipulative behaviour.

Say you're in a job where a client is being charged an hourly rate for your time by your employer (like a software developer, project manager, or consultant), what kind of ratio /proportion would normally be the employee's wage?

Long story short, it's been a year since I was told I was getting a pay rise which didn't happen due to lockdown. Now we're due to get a contract, where my 'time' has been quoted (albeit at part time hours) but at more than 3x my rate.

How would you guys approach this?

I work as a consultant.

I get paid well, but my hourly rate is ridiculous. It's around 8x my pay.

Yeah our rates at work are insane, the amount that I'm charged at to the client is many, many times what I actually get paid.

I think on the last check it was something like 7 or 8x my pay! :lol:

This is why independently contracting can be so lucrative, albeit a route with a lot more risk.

Also, I wouldn't say I get paid 'well' - so if you're saying you do Roc and the multiple is that much then it must be an emmense amount the clients are being charged.

Yeah not insanely like, but above national average. It's heartening in a way, as it makes you realise how much money is out there and how easily large companies throw it about. Just gotta try and get hold of a piece of it...

When you take into account employee overheads (pension, sick pay, holiday, training, travel time & expenses, allowing for less than 100% productivity time - toilet breaks etc, equipment, office rental, recruitment, management overhead), it often costs x2 the amount of your salary to employee someone. This obviously varies massively depending on the amount of training needed and the salary itself, but isn't a bad figure.

So the charge out rate has to be at least x2 with zero profit. Then you've got company overheads like winning work, taxes, marketing, R&D etc. etc.

I think my charge out is normally between x4 and x8 of my salary.

It's why I can and should quite fairly change £200-500 per day because I also have to pay all those overheads. I still don't.

The business also doesn't just need money to run, it needs money to grow and please shareholders and pay dividends. For sure that comes out of quadrupling whatever your "human resources" cost.

Fun fact that surprises nobody: I also don't like exploiting myself or other people hence I make no money.

If I was a single person with no dependents I would absolutely have gone down the independent contractor route because the earning potential is huge, but yeah the risk profile just doesn't make sense with my personal situation at the moment. I'd rather take the decent and reliable salary than run the risk of getting paid amazingly well for a while and then finding I'm out of work!

BBC Look North were filming on site today, not sure when it'll be on but knowing my luck if I am on there I'll be messing around on my phone or tripping over a grave.

I was paid great for a grand total of about 3 days

(it might have been slightly more than that to be fair but I can't remember anymore, once they started getting weird about picking and choosing the days I was in I could tell from experience there were Manager Problems)

Ive been really tempted at multiple points but even with no dependents decided not to for now. Mainly as I like being able to switch off once my laptop is closed and I feel that's significantly harder to do when you're having to run everything.

Just next week to go.

FD just needed me to explain to him how I do credit control so that he can make sure it stays up to date after I'm gone. It's really simple, if someone's payment is overdue, pick up the phone and ask them to confirm a payment date.

Like I said a hundred times before, it's like having to wipe his arse for him. I have no idea how he gets through day to day life.
