BAKA wrote:Wrestle Kingdom was ace. When you can't get the likes of Suzuki, Goto and Hangman Page on the main card, you know it's an insane card. Loved Ospreay vs Ibushi (that ring post spot was nasty). I'm guessing it got cut short? Or perhaps I'm just a mark. I was disappointed in the Super Jr Tag match, some nice spots with Takagi, but it paled dramatically to some of the tournament matches. The other 3 way Tag match was much better, so glad to see EVIL and Sanada win. Kushida's entrance was terrifying... Huge fan of ZSJ. Still can't get away with Juice Robinson. I'm not the biggest Jay White fan either to be honest. But he's got the unenviable task of living up to Balor, Styles and Omega. Jericho said his match with Naito wouldn't be a classic, it would be a war, honestly, I disagree. Felt pretty damn class to me. Naito is just so likeable, reminds me of Eddie G. Omega vs Tanahashi was amazing. I literally squealed when Tana hit the Styles Clash. Genuinely a noise I never knew I was capable of... I loved when Tana pointed to the sky that Red Shoes looked up... Red Shoes is gold.

I think the whole AEW kinda hung over the results, it felt obvious the guys involved with that would lose matches / titles. I hope they end up with a working relationship with NJPW.

Looking forward to tomorrow's event, I'll be saving it for Sunday night though. It's usually where they set up new feuds, isn't it? I remember that's where Jericho turned up last year to set up everything with Naito.

So Wrestle Kingdom is over 2 days next year, is that right? Annoying they only partially subbed that video package. I notice they mentioned the UK too, when are they coming here? When can I buy tickets...

This was my first Wrestle Kingdom and I thought it was brilliant, the fact that it's been considered as not as 'good' as previous years makes me want to watch the last few even more!

I was burned a bit by the AEW announcement too. Had avoided everything to do with Cody etc. but decided to search on what it was all about after his match. First headline I see is

The Elite are gone, The Bullet Club are safe.

Whoops. Really hope Omega doesn't go to WWE, I'm done with seeing so many brilliant wrestlers getting wasted on the main shows.

Didn't take anything away from the main event though, that was quite something indeed.

The only problem I had with the whole thing that I had to end up watching it over three nights, so I'm already planning a week off for watching next year's!

Well up for a London trip in August, that'd be awesome.

It was only my second full Wrestle Kingdom, I've seen the one with Nakamura vs Styles, and various matches from others, but I loved it from start to finish. I think I'm going to try and watch them all this year. For me, the most enjoyable show, or series of shows, was the G1 Climax. There were a load of stellar singles matches. I'm hoping it'll be the same this year.

I watched New Year's Dash last night and enjoyed that too. It felt a little perfunctory in the shadow of WK, but set up some feuds I'm looking forward to. Can't say I'm that enamoured for Naito vs Taichi. I think the best thing I've seen so far from Taichi is Miho Abe. :shifty:

Naito and Taichi actually have really good in-ring chemistry. They've had a couple of singles matches which were really good. There was one at the anniversary show last year which is worth looking up on NJPWworld.

Also Taichi deserves all the belts. :toot:

Wrestle Kingdom 9 was great. It's widely regarded as one of, if not the, best.

Tanahashi vs Okada
Nakamura vs Ibushi
Styles v Naito
Suzuki vs Sakuraba

were all fantastic, and there were three tag matches that were all al to of fun.

By the way, if anyone wants a New Japan focused podcast to listen to, I can't recommend the Super J-Cast enough. By far my favourite wrestling podcast.

I think after the stella last WK, this one didn’t have the same appeal. The 3 mains were fantastic but felt the undercard was mid par this year.

A nice video package for Gene Okerlund tonight as you’d expect, albeit with barely any WCW material in it.

But rather than playing his theme music to close the segment, they of course played Hogan’s (who received a decent pop and chant, but a more subdued reaction compared to his normal standards, especially considering they’re in his backyard of Florida).

They also announced John Cena is in the Rumble match.

I thought it was a rather middling and uninspired promo from Hogan. Maybe it is the severe damage he has done to his own credibility, but what he said didn't feel genuine. I think Flair would have done a better job, but they wouldn't have done that as they try not to acknowledge WCW.

Shad Khan statement on All Elite Wrestling:

I am the lead investor, a supporter and a backer of All Elite Wrestling, and I anticipate great things today and into the future for AEW and everyone who has worked passionately on this week’s launch. I know AEW will be welcomed by wrestling fans here in the U.S. and throughout the world who are ready for something new and authentic. AEW will work hard to deliver on that promise.

As important, I am the father – the proud father – of Tony Khan, who will serve in a leadership role at AEW during the 2019 launch and in the years ahead. Tony will assemble a great team to take AEW over the top, for the benefit of everyone who loves the wrestling industry, while continuing to serve in his current capacities with the Jaguars and Fulham.

AEW will operate as an organization completely independently from my other interests. It will not deter attention or divert resources from any of my businesses, teams, projects or investments. At the same time, AEW will enjoy the same full commitment I’ve given to everything and everyone in my life – my family and friends, my business and, in recent years, to sports, hospitality and now entertainment.

And his son, Tony Khan:

Wrestling fans are a community unlike most others. I’ve been a part of this community since I was 7 years old, and I can tell you that wresting fans see the world every day through a special lens. We see wrestling in Hollywood films and tv shows, we see elements of wrestling in the presentation of sports and in the marketing of grandiose star athletes, and we certainly see wrestling in politics.

The wrestling community is a constant; its members are diverse, we are physically located on all corners of the planet, yet we are constantly connected. Recently, a new family has formed, bonded by love and respect for wresting but armed with a vision and resources that have never before been available to the wrestling community. Our objective is to connect our community closer than ever before through All Elite Wrestling, or AEW.

AEW does not mean any less of a continued commitment to existing obligations and duties that I have, or my family has, to our business and sports interests. That will never be the case. What’s important is that every individual decision we make as family, whether it’s ownership or investment in a team or property, is 100 percent beneficial to those specific interests. I will always welcome that accountability and responsibility, as nothing is more important than serving our supporters and friends.

AEW will launch with a roster of the top wrestlers in the world. While they’ll clash in what will be some of the most intense and fast-paced contests ever sanctioned in the squared circle, they’ll also share a common goal: to make this the true golden age, to make this the greatest time ever to be a wrestling fan. Likewise, as a business, by treating our wrestlers with respect and warmth, we also seek to make this the golden age for the performers themselves.

I urge everyone who believes in what we’re doing, or wants to believe in dreams coming true, to support AEW by spreading the word and passing the wrestling bug onto someone else. My message: Get in on the ground floor with AEW today and help lead our movement to grow the wrestling community and ensure that the voices of the wrestling fans, their creative minds and their remarkable ideas, will always be heard.

Looks like the WWE may finally have some serious competition not seen since Ted Turner. They’re certainly richer. Will ultimately depend on what type of TV deal they can muster up.

Chris Jericho promising that the promotion will “change the entire universe”. They also set off more pyro than RAW and SmackDown all year, as if just to prove a point.

I starting to wonder if wwe have spread themselves too thin and overcommitted themselves around the world with their multiple of hours of weekly programming. Making it very difficult to react to a successful AEW. Only time will tell.

Kinda wrestling related but apparently R-Truth is doing the entrance music for Jack Swagger’s MMA debut. I hope he sings Get Rowdy with Road Dogg

Very excited for AEW, huge potential there with the amount of money behind them. I’m sure there are plenty WWE superstars that are sitting next to their contracts looking at their watch, The Revival, Finn Balor, Kevin Owens, Zach Ryder to name just a few. And I’m sure CM Punk would love to give Vince a scare if the money was right.

Genuinely have no desire to see Punk in a ring again. Pretty much got no credibility after his UFC stint. That doesn't mean they couldn't bring him on anyways doing the other thing he excelled at... colour commentary.

Punk's also not the good PR machine that he used to be after the whole thing with Colt Cabana thing.

Jericho and Cody were openly taking the piss out of him on a podcast not long ago about when he tried to be the locker room leader in WWE and everyone just laughed.
