and if so, I like the rhyme and form a lot, but shouldn't you swap Hammer Bro and Cheep Cheep to get that sweet echo with Mario?

Got it in one, and also yes you're exactly right. Here is the poem revised:

I think it could be fun to see what I can come up with for later Mario games as well. Pokemon seems like an obvious choice too given the number of characters to draw on from each generation.

I think the challenge is picking sprites/a game that enough people are familiar with to be able to read them without diving into a wiki. I actually started off thinking about writing one with various characters from different series, but quickly I narrowed that down to NES to have some visual consistency between sprites, and from there further limiting to Super Mario Bros. seemed a natural restriction.

I think a small amount of googling might add to the charm! Makes it a puzzle!

Really cool idea btw!

"There was a young plumber from Brooklyn"

I'm not convinced this approach works so well in a longer and stricter style - but the attempt here was to write a limerick.

The visual layout alone adds an extra difficulty in choice of sprites, which is why Princess Peach, Lakitu, Angry Sun and Boom Boom are all edited such to a consistent size.

Interested in people's opinions on how well this one works, and any suggestions!

Lava Bubble is another name for a Podoboo, which is what they were called up until Super Mario World.

Been playing through Everybody's Gone to the Rapture again, which still contains one of the best moments of narrative design I've seen in a video game. Naturally, I wrote about it:

There's minor spoilers throughout, but nothing that really removes anything from the game's impact if you haven't played it (which you strawberry floating should)

Good write-up Taf, and interesting as I never read into the light design itself, but your argument for its meaning is convincing.

EGTTR is amazing for me for its sense of place. The Shropshire village is almost perfectly realised, feeling instantly familiar yet also mysterious (and almost too stereotypical, like Ambridge from The Archers). I wonder how different an experience the game is outside of the UK, for those less familiar with that setting. It must be markedly different, if nothing else.

I played Sagebrush on Sunday, another walking sim, and it reminded me a lot of EGTTR. It's also really good - I recommend you check it out.

Thanks Orange.

I'm actually fairly homesick at the moment so playing through the game has been even more emotionally charged than normal. You're right in the whole thing feeling a little uncanny, an obvious intention of the developers, but it's both the sense of place and time that really gets me. As a child of the 80s just seeing the perfectly realised public telephone receivers sends a shiver of nostalgia down my spine.

I can't even imagine playing it without those cues.

What's incredibly sad is that The Chinese Room have now all but shut

In a blog post, that seems to have been removed unfortunately, one of the directors pointed directly to their struggles in dealing with Sony as a publisher as her personal reason for leaving game development for good.

Such a strawberry floating shame.

EDIT: Hang on... a light at the end of the tunnel apparently:

You've seen me talk of it before, but now it has seen an expansion.

I've been developing the concept of Mii Resort Paradise, bringing everything together as a fully realised game concept without going into too much detail (and I could go into too much detail with this, trust me). And so, take a look at Mii Resort Paradise - The Expansion on my blog, and see what you think.

I could never put a definitive number on it, but with my fan-created content that I'm working on picking up again, along with an increased effort with my blog, I could say I get in roughly fifteen hours on an average week.

Here's a poem/parody. For context, Preston is the temple for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (aka the Mormons). I'm not going there any time soon, so not an autobiogaphical poem. Just something for a bit of fun.

Enemies might stare
Laugh at me, sneer and glare
Say I'm stupid, unworthy and a fraud
They don't see I've come this far
Made a change, turned my life over to God
Looked to the Saviour
And become the person that He wants

I've definitely struggled with all of these
Rules, temptations and getting a testimony
Of why He gave me life,
I've been in such an awful muddle,
But despite all of my struggles
I'm still alive

And now it's September, and I'm getting all down
Yeah, it's September so no need to frown
Hey, it's time for me
To go to the Lord's house, yeah now

I'm gonna go back to Preston
I'm gonna go back real soon
I'm gonna go back to Preston
Where everything is really cool

Back to scriptures and covenants and spiritual treats
Holy Ghost and the Saviour and spiritual feasts
It's all that I love
And it's all that I need
At Preston
Preston
Glad I'm going back

I'll see my friends
Be baptised for those who have died
Buy new garments
Gonna look to the sky
Oh God will see me and probably cry
He'll look at me
And say that I'm totally awesome!

I'm far from Hell
Been baptised in the font
Learning more of God's heart
Yeah, bring it on
And all this time
Christ has walked along
'Cause together we're totally awesome
Yeah together we're totally awesome!

It's been so long
But I'm going back
Don't go there for c*ck
Don't go there for ass
As long as I'm with the Saviour
It's totally gas
And it's going to be totally awesome!

Yes I'm gonna take the temple by storm
Be praying all night
Saints gonna Morm
And will not forget
That I need to keep to the path
If I want to go back to the Lord

God may seem grumpy
But He's got a huge heart
That's why we pray
and read scriptures to start
Where I still fall short, Christ makes up He's smart
And you bet that's totally awesome!

At the temple I plan to study a lot
Feel the Spirit burning really hot
Yeah come on,
God's the greatest Father we've got
And that's cool
And that's totally awesome
Yeah it's so cool
Yeah it's totally awesome!

I've turned to the Saviour ain't gonna let Him down
It's like I was lost but now I'm found
Think it's very plain to me
Very easy for everyone to see now

I'm gonna go back to Preston
I'm gonna go back real soon
I'm gonna go back to Preston
Where everything is really cool

Back to scriptures and covenants and spiritual treats
Holy Ghost and the Saviour and spiritual feasts
It's all that I love
And it's all that I need
At Preston
Preston
Glad I'm going back

Nice one. Could definitely be turned into a song. It just has that tone to it for me.
