I know we have a Videos thread but I thought I'd start a generalised topic for interesting videos and/or channels we all watch on the old 'tube! I'd also like for this to be a place to discuss the ethics of said video giant from their hands off approach to moderation to controversies involving popular 'tubers. So, you know, [POLITICS]

Amongst my current channel recommends are:

Lindsay Ellis

Hands down my fav channel on YouTube, Lindsay dissects film and television through a number of critical lenses as well as talking about adjacent topics like product placement and Death of the Author.

Recommended starting point is her two part* look at The Hobbit trilogy and what went wrong. This nabbed her and her team a freaking Hugo nomination.

*or...is it?

Bon Appetit

I'm fairly new to these guys but have seen them recommended by so many others that I had to have a look. And they're great! It's a cooking and food based channel that has several regular section and personalities as well as many one off vids and recipes. The presenters are likeable and knowledgable and I'm looking forward to watching more.

I started with their Gourmet Makes series where chef Claire makes gourmet versions of cheap and nasty consumer products. A good starting point is her Gourmet Pop Tarts

Game Makers Toolkit

A long running series that delves into the multifaceted arena of game design. Mark Brown perfectly tows the line between entertaining and informative without ever being patronising.

His video on what makes a good game puzzle is excellent

Contrapoints

Natalie Wynn has been termed the Oscar Wilde of YouTube as she darts from controversial topic to controversial topic. She's grown in fame recently due to her videos being a notable source of de-radicalisation of previously far right young men, and her breaking down of issues surrounding trans rights.

Her fedora-wearing misogynist video is probably the preeminent video essay on that culture and is a fantastic entry point to her style:

Honourable Mentions

NoClip Former Gamespot/Giant Bomb journo Danny O'Dwyer's hugely succesful documentary series. The production values are top notch, the subjects interesting and the man himself watchable as get-out.

hbomberguy A more generalised channel, Harris Brewer tackles a wide range of topics from the alt-right to Ctrl-Alt-Delete. You've probably seen him from his Ben Shapiro/Aquaman clip that went viral recently

NakeyJakey He's not got much to say really but he's a master of the comedic edit and his videos are laugh out loud funny.

GRTube:

Of course, some of us fine GRcaders have also entered the lucrative world of YouTube CONTENT CREATION:

Vermilion's Vermilion Studios Lots of nicely shot travel footage and a bunch of information on currency collections!
DarkRula sees uploads of gaming related content based mostly on highlights of games Dark's been playing, such as the recently published video on Star Wars Battlefront EA 2

I don't watch a lot on Youtube, I mainly just use it to upload streams from Twitch to it. I'm mega popular too. I get like 1 view for 2 minutes every 200 videos.

You should definitely have a deeper look I think! There's an incredible wealth of good, informative, entertaining content there, but unfortunately YT's terrible algorithm tends to obscure most of it behind click-bait and Controversy Streamers. There's this channel for example, that was super helpful while I was setting up my paltry Twitch profile:

Gaming Careers

Will post some of my faves later, but how about also using the OP as a directory in which we can submit our own channels?

I didn't even know some GRcaders even had channels until I stumbled across them by chance.

Will, have a look. I'm interested in looking at various stuff, but I'm lazy so just stick to Easy Allies, Octavious Kitten, and a few other channels. I don't watch most of the stuff I subscribe too.

Great idea! Mention them here, or DM me, and I'll add them.

I follow some smaller channels for guitar based content. That's about it. There's 2 English guys that I like, Dave Simpson and Jon Robson. Both have instructional stuff and cheap gear videos.

I really don't like the YouTube guitar community all that much. The more prolific ones are just annoying as strawberry float to me, and a lot of the music coming out of them is crap (djent? It's gooseberry fool, total gooseberry fool).

Brief selection of my more interesting subscriptions:

Corridor Crew - Small sized VFX studio who have in the past few months released a few interesting series, particularly reactions/explanations to CGI and practical stunts. It's a little dudebro-y but they're good for getting a behind the scenes view on the craft and creativity of certain aspects of movie making. This is a neat little video series they do too:

Ryan Hollinger - Short, interesting breakdowns of the theme of a particular horror movie, often exploring the film's impact on the horror genre at the time.

Pablo Strong - Just some photographer/videographer guy who sporadically releases prolonged vox pops in the series Streets of London. His questions are a little inane (what are you doing in London today, what makes you happy etc.) but the responses he tends to get are interesting, and the editing and flow of the episodes really gets you into it. They remind me of the kind of short documentaries you used to see on TV twenty years ago.

Spent a weekend just watching this guy's videos recently, going by the views he gets I suppose he isn't exactly unknown but still.

Just a guy who goes camping in the wilderness for a night or two, often with his dog who's sadly passed away now but he has a new dog.

Arlo. Puppet that's not a muppet reviews Nintendo games.

Flossy Carter. Just a tech review channel but the guy's voice is cool as strawberry float.

Buzzfeed Multiplayer has some good stuff like an actual lawyer playing Phoenix Wright and actual goat playing Goat Simulator

Got a handful I look to regularly.

BSoD Gaming - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCex2B- ... Q/featured
Does videos mostly covering emulators and their progress. So lots of stuff on Cemu (Wii U), RPCS3 (PS3) and Yuzu (Switch) just now. Great place to see when new builds are worth looking at and does occasional guides on how to optimise and set up each emulator.

ETA Prime - https://www.youtube.com/user/Mretaprime

Found this channel when I first started using the game frontend/launcher launchbox as he does really good tutorials on how to set it up. His videos are mostly hardware oriented, but with a focus on emulation and similar applications. It was following some of his videos that I made my £200 emulation PC (It's damn good for the price) and picked up the Bitboy Pocket Go. Great channel, but better hide your wallet as it just makes me want to buy stuff.

ThePrimeThanatos - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCmYTgp ... CPDrmaXuqQ

Going through a bit of a Synthwave phase just now and this channel has some great livestreams. Mostly retro-electro stuff. Great background music.

Anyone with even a passing interest in architecture should have a look at the B1M.

One channel I like to follow...

Kurzgesagt

This channel seeks to inform viewers about a wide variety of issues and subjects, including matters of real world importance, like the role of the EU, organic food, economics, pollution, and marijuana legalization. The channel also as talks about scientific subjects, ranging from the processes that govern the immune system, to evolution, the origins of consciousness, vaccines and string theory, to sillier, more off the wall thought experiment type subjects, like black hole bombs & civilizations, or strange matter.

Endlessly interesting, well presented, thoroughly researched and perfectly digestible, they do wonderful work and I can only recommend them.
