Actually being a competitive Smash player, this is just an occupational hazard.
What does annoy me about online play though is fighting against someone who clearly doesn't have a clue how to play the game. This is usually within the first month of playing a fighting game. I'll go through single player, unlock everything, get all the extra doo-dads, and then once I feel like I've got a grasp on how the game works I'll jump into online to fight others, only to find what seems like someone who literally bought the game that day and immediately went to play online. I get that online is the main appeal for a lot of people, but it's very boring to fight against. It's like setting up a complex board game, throwing away the rules, and then trying to play blind
This attitude is why I don't play online games beyond racing games. Why am I not allowed to play how I want? I don't need someone giving me agro over team chat becuase I'm not playing how they want me to or I don't know every square mm of a level yet.
You can play how you like, I just said it was annoying
for me. And I wouldn't give you agro over it lmao. On the flip side I see the same people complain about jumping online for the first time and finding players who are 'too good' and it's 'unfair'. Not saying that's you ofc. There's a difference between learning the intracies of a game through playing others and experiencing the meta, and just learning the absolute basic rules of the game. Sorry to hear you don't play online games because of this though, you shouldn't let others put you off something you enjoy. I know there are definitely some toxic players out there who are just nasty to everyone.
Yeah I wasn't having a go at you personally, it just seems to be the case where you're expected to pump in 1000s of hours to know every single aspect of the game you're playing online, and if you're not up to scratch then you're either a burden on a team or deemed so gooseberry fool you become a target and can't enjoy the game either way. In my first and only COD online game, I got called a "Camping banana split" by one guy becuase I walked up to a window and looked out of it. The same match a helicopter appeared so I tried to shoot it down, and had the opposition laughing at me and calling me a wanker for the rest of the match.
I tried to play some evolve online and got abuse because I got assigned a medic role but DARED to shoot at the monster when it appeared. strawberry floating knobs, not everyone has the time to dedicate to learning everything before going online.
Yeah that just sounds like a bunch of knobs lmao. That's unfortunate, most people aren't that angry from my experience. I'm sure I would have tried shooting at the helicopter too tbh lol

Sounds like you already figured out the best strats

Like I say it sounds like the main problem is matchmaking - genuine n00bs with no skill in the game shouldn't be getting paired up against someone who knows their gooseberry fool - as Jezo describes that situation is not going to be fun for anyone!
I was thinking more just people who don't even know the controls like A is jump or whatever lol, but yeah, that's why good matchmaking is key!
