Someone who wants to pay less probably.

If you want to get a new handset and a decent plan of minutes/texts/data it is still much cheaper to get a long term phone+sim deal than it is to try buy them separately (especially if you are going to do top-up and not get a sim only contract)

Buying a phone outright and getting a SIM only contract is normally cheaper though? With phone contracts you end up paying over the cost of the phone, it just has the advantage of not being all upfront for those who can't avoid it.

Depends how long you keep your phone somewhat I guess.

I've heard this argument many times and it never stacks up for me. Case in point my last phone upgrade was to a Galaxy S9 just after launch.

I got this at £35 per month on a 24 month contract, so £840 over that period.

The handset cost at that time was £739. To get a sim only deal equivalent to the data/minutes/texts I am on would be at least £15 per month. Over 24 months that is £1099.

I've yet to see an example where buying the handset and getting a sim is cheaper, unless you compromise on either the phone or the data/minutes/texts allowance.

I imagine a couple of factors come into play - buying the latest handset on release is easily the most expensive way to go when buying a new phone, and not everyone needs that large a data/etc. package.

I pay £6 a month for my SIM only contract and my phone cost me ~£300, that was considerably cheaper than comparable phone contracts at the time. Can't give you the specific comparison as that was a few years ago now!

Buying a phone of the back of a lorry doesn't count though ;)

Paging RichardUK to the thread.

Or send one of the kids from the corner to his crib to fetch him, I forget how it works.

Jen, have you done the maths on better value for money handsets?

I bought my OP3T in Dec 2016 for £400 and have a £15 per month since only deal with Virgin. The phone is still as good as new aside from a couple of marks on the corners and have no need to upgrade any time soon. I estimate I may upgrade in 2020/21.

Edit: you also can't underestimate the flexibility of bring able to change your SIM only deal on a month by month basis instead of being trapped in the same contract for two years.

Website design is now worse than ever. Today trying to view the Boots website on my phone and it just refuses to load the second page. It seems to be the in-thing at the moment where instead of pages being separate entities, they're supposed to scroll n load or change while still being on the same page, so you get the wheel of doom, and it's slow, cumbersome, and in this case doesn't work at all.

If your website doesn't work on an iPhone, you're gooseberry fool bruv. gooseberry fool.

strawberry float ever paying for the latest mobile on monthly contract ever again. Mugs game.

My ~£400 S8 (which I've had 6 months) and a sim-only £18p/m contract giving me 30GB of data has completely changed my stance.

Why would you be annoyed that you can't play a gooseberry fool game?

Because I want the trilogy! Not being able to get Fable 2 on PC annoys me, too.

But Fable 2 is good, so I understand that.

Crackdown 2 is perfectly serviceable, I quite enjoyed it.

I genuinely was bored shitless playing it, and loved Crackdown. 3 is shaping up to be great fun too.

See, this is what I mean.

So over a standard 24 month contract you'll end up paying £400 + (£18 X 24) which works out at £832 for an older model phone. For £8 more over that time I've got a brand new S9!

As above, a phone at approx £400 and a contact in the teens is working out similar to what I pay, and is a compromise on the phone and probably the allowances as well.

The best SIM only deals usually tie you in to a 12-24 month contract anyway, genuinely flexible SIM deals which you can change monthly tend to raise the costs again.

I have looked at other phones (I'm no Samsung fanboy!) but haven't got on with them, they either lack features (headphone jack, SD card slots etc.), have annoying aspects (notch, input lag...) or I just plain haven't liked the feel of them.

My main curse is that I tend to be a neophile and find it too tempting to pick up a new phone every few years, otherwise I would stick with an old phone beyond the contract and go SIM only for the saving.

I haven't heard of any SIM only deals that aren't 30 rolling contracts tbh.

There are plenty of 1 month ones, but the best deals are locked to a longer term.

I get 24GB of data for my phone at the moment, the closest 1 month deals I can see will get me 20GB for £20 per month, that's nearly £500 over 24 months before you've even bought the handset.

Not always the case, if you buy mid range it will cost more on contract, but for a high end phone you wont actually save much by going sim only and buying it.

You've kind of already defeated the point of a value assessment by buying the latest most powerful handset possible and discounting other options, it is a waste of argument. In most cases it is considerably cheaper to buy a phone and a 30 day SIM for average usage and normal features.

It'll cost marginally less or the same to get the latest phone on a contract, the point is nobody actually needs that.

I pay £5 per month and use a handset from 2008, my tablet or laptop does everything else. I take pictures with a real camera and if I need maps I put my SIM card in my old smartphone that isn't constantly buggering it's battery by being on constantly for 3 years eventually rendering it useless by simply functioning at all.

Mobile phone obselecence is also terrible for the environment and some of the people making and mining for them. The environmental and human impact of manufacturing just one phone is crazy nevermind hundreds of millions of the same strawberry floating thing every 12 months.
