[Rules p.1] Things that annoy you guys. 100 percent. Not gonna lie

If you want to make mods aware of something, use the report function. If you want to discuss some aspect of the community, create a thread in feedback. Either of those will be more helpful and won't derail the thread.

Just sayin', it always seems to be people that have questionable opinions that end up drawing the most flak, which is no surprise I guess. I think we're a pretty progressive and friendly bunch most of the time, but we also don't suffer fools gladly as my mum would say. Chat gooseberry fool, get banged.

He actually challenged me on a comment I made where I suggested you can't "both sides" the abortion ban (I believe the ban to be 100% wrong for clarity), and offered an eloquent, non-sensationalist response as to why he felt you could (he also indicated he was "largely" pro choice if my memory serves - apologies if I am mistaken on this, I have not read the thread back since then).

I did not agree, but could see that he had an opinion that was not just to goad others. He did not become my nemesis.

It doesn't have to be this hard (context).

Preezy, come on, dude. I feel that we just can't be condoning this nor making excuses.

I'm not condoning, I'm just saying I can see why some would react the way they do, particularly on a topic as volatile as abortion. It's an internet forum, people are always going to use looser/more animated language than they would if we were all sat in a room together talking about this stuff.

Reading that back it does look like I'm condoning

I'm genuinely surprised by this response, Orange. It's clear that there is an issue arising from the name-calling and to just acknowledge this by suggesting that querying it is not being helpful and that "the thread is being derailed"... that can't be right.

I feel that we don't need a group of people to have to sit down and pore over a complaint thread; more just a case of posting "please turn down the heat level and avoid name-calling, guys".

I dunno if someone is being an unequivocal idiot I don't see what's wrong with shutting that down. Imagine picking apart a service charge section on a bill when eating out, I mean the actual act of sitting there with a full belly in the restaurant doing that. Punishing the lowest on the rung workers when your grievance should be with the people running the place. Nah man that's scummy and can't be excused.

Maybe someone can only tip 10% or 5%

I personally don't like it when places just add a service charge on. Why is this not factored into the price?

Another question, if you are volunteering more of your hard-earnt cash in the form of a tip/service charge, is it fair to want some control of whom it goes to?

I don't know and can't be bothered looking. But do the cleaners at restaurants earn more than the servers?

Perhaps a mod would have posted something along those lines if any of the posts you've called out as being problematic had been reported. If you think there is an issue that's literally the point of the report function.

Me replying like this is derailing the thread (well, sort of - I guess it does annoy me a bit!)

I’m not a fan of places adding a service charge onto a bill especially if it’s a small table (2-4 people) if I have good service then I’ll leave a tip, choice should be mine and mine alone.

Orange, I think you're a good guy, and I don't want to have any sort of bad feeling whatsoever with you.

But.. this idea that highlighting name-calling is somehow a bad thing and is derailing the thread.... no. I feel that we should be far more passionate about not accepting the bad forum behaviour rather than being too concerned about a temporary interruption of chat.

A member has left the forum and it's starting to feel like this is being washed over.

I'm literally telling you how you can more effectively highlight it and get it sorted out by the mods

I have never seen anybody in 'spoons handing over £5 to the bloke that brings the food to the table.

Having worked for just a month short of 10 years in spoons I can tell you its company policy not to accept tips but some pubs take it a step forward and tell you to take tips but to put it in the till its for the company not you.... You are also if things have not changed not supposed to accept drinks from custormers. I can happily tell you I have accepted a decent amount of tips and a lot of drinks and they have gone to me..... Spoons are an absolute horrid company.

He volunteered the information he posted and we discussed it. I don't think he should leave, but I'm not going to rub his tummy and tell him that he's a good boy for playing a weird game with people's incomes.

If someone doesn't point out when you're making a mistake then you wont learn. He's mistaken in what he is doing, but I don't think he should leave the forum because of it. Just pick it up and move on.
