It drives me crazy when people come in sick, but we don’t have much choice so I can’t blame them. The Bradford score bollocks means that people are forced in with various diseases, everyone else catches it and so we all end up sick.

I have no idea if we have adopted the beloved Bradford Factor or not but people here come into the office the majority of the time. Even if they are in a post with the opportunity and flexibility to work from home.

I personally WFH if I'm ill, which is very rarely, fortunately.

And that’s another annoyance of mine (not you personally!).

The management have given out written warnings to people over their number of sick days, which has forced people to come in sick. But the management have the option of working from home, which isn’t available to the majority of us. So we have a situation where one day they will be bollocking somebody for daring to have been off sick and the next day the same manager will email in to say they are not feeling great and so will be working from home. Which doesn’t count towards their Bradford score.

Arseholes. And people wonder why I do as little as possible.

Apparently the average number of sick days someone takes in a year has nearly halved since the 90s (going from 7.2 in 93 to just over 4 in 2017). There just seem to be so many factors that put people off doing the right thing of actually staying at home when ill, it's ridiculous. :fp:

On the whole it is not that bad, we have some very weird characters in this office though.

But the sickness policy is appalling. It is not even something I have fallen foul of, but I see it happening to others and find it hard to believe that a company thinks it is right to punish people for being ill. And then to punish the people that are not ill by forcing the sick people into work.

Apparently we are all going to get the option to work from home soon, which might change things for the better.

Just think how much more time Moggy could spend on here if he was working from home.

I think it's more of a British work culture thing than anything to do with the Bradford score. Don't get me wrong, I know that you can end up in a difficult position where you effectively have to not get ill for 5 months or whatever but I'm sure it's more to do with some macho bull gooseberry fool and wearing the "I've not had a day off sick in X years" badge of honour.

I genuinely hate calling in sick as I know the work banter along with the usual candidates telling me how many years it is since they've had a day off sick will follow.

That or "I can't remember the last time I was off sick" have been regulars wherever I've worked.

My current place isn't too bad for this, but I've definitely been in jobs in the past where people boast about this kind of gooseberry fool like it's a badge of honour. :fp:

It might be like that in some places, but it’s not like that here.

I post a lot less at home so I’d probably be here less as I could watch TV and play games instead.

It's just... weird. Like if a friend tells me they've broken their arm, my reaction is going to be "oh man what happened?" not "Well my arm is fine!". I don't get how it's a thing to boast about. Being ill is like a universal point of sympathy.

Being ill is a sign of weakness. People are trying to show they're not weak.

I think this is the mindset anyway, as stupid as that is.

Well that particular mindset is framed around the idea that illness is a weakness or demonstrates some form of deficiency or inferior aspect to the person suffering from it. They as the stronger and better person would never be brought down by something like a simple illness! Additionally they are also indicating that even if they were to get ill they would still have the strength and character to continue working through it and anyone who can't is either a loser or not trying hard enough.

Basically some people are desperate for a way to feel superior to others and this is one of the ways they can fulfill that.
