Am I alone in thinking this is utterly bizarre?

"Haha, this guy only has a house, a wife and kids, LMAO! He doesn't even have lots of largely anonymous internet friends like me loooool what a loser!"

What the strawberry float  there are an increasing number of times that I feel I have lost all touch with modern society and this is certainly one of them.

Funilly enough this guy did a great talk about writing at a conference I attended. So I was on his mailing list.

He writes quite a bit about self esteem and imposter syndrome and things like that, so I'm not surprised.

I also detect a hint of irony but yeah it's a bit of an odd tweet.

Edit: He's stated it was meant as an ironic joke, and I can certainly see the irony there

He's a good writer.

Anyway, he's kind of right. Everyone who was a dick to me at school has a really banal life in my opinion. It's not uncommon that the weird and unusual kids that get bullied end up with the kind of grit and determination they need to do something uncommon, not that that itself is to be celebrated, or that there's anything wrong with a "normal" life. There absolutely isn't. It is however ironic when it's occasionally for the same things you were vilified for at school that you take on to be really good at.

But that's the romantic version. The at least as likely outcome is that those kids give up on doing anything remotely different and go on to live unfulfilling lives, or even suffer so badly that they take their own.

Edit: the best way to get attention on the internet is to post something wrong, confirmed. I did meet the guy though so it added something :slol:

After all the drama with that tweet, I went on to read one of his articles about 'cosy crime' novels – why they are largely gooseberry fool, and why Richard Osman's are particularly bad. He makes a few great points and you're right that the writing is good. In summary, his devious plan of posting a joke tweet to get attention has worked pretty well!

I quite like cost crime novels, and have enjoyed Osman's for what they're worth. That tweet is a poorly constructed attempt at a joke therefore this guy is clearly a knobhead

Yeah I mean they're good, those novels, but they're expensive. :shifty:

The Cost Crime Club is going to be the title of my new novel series now

YouTube's inline playback feature is the most pointless thing to exist. You can't leave your mouse still for even a second otherwise it'll start playing a video, which then adds it to your history and thus messes your entire front page and recommendations up if it's something you aren't interested in. Thankfully it can be disabled, but why would you even want it on in the first place?

Netflix.

Thought I'd finally get around to watching season two of the The Witcher, so I go to My List and scroll down...can't find it. Look again, this time working my way up the list, but I still can't see it. I use the search function to find it, and lo and behold, it's been removed from my list. Why? I haven't removed it. It's pretty difficult to accidentally remove something as well, so that seems unlikely. It's not the first time it's happened either. Several times over the years I've had gooseberry fool disappear from my list, either just not showing for some reason, or actually removed enitely from My List without me choosing to remove it :fp:

I then go to start the first episode of season two, and it starts a recap of season one. Actually quite helpful, but suddenly I need to pause it. Oh, of course, you can't pause it. You can only skip the recap or let it continue playing. I back out of the episode instead, hoping I'll have the option to watch the recap again next time I start the episode, but no, of course not - that would be too easy and make too much sense. Seems it's a one-time only thing with no choice to ever watch it again. What a load of gooseberry fool. Who designed this? Didn't anybody think it through? Absolutely blows my mind when simple gooseberry fool like this gets butchered. These are strawberry floating basics.

Netflix seem to hire far more than average data scientists, so basically all of their decisions are based on real-time input and heavy handed analytics. This has the benefit of being generally accessible to the most people, but anyone who follows a certain kind of inner/behavioural logic that isn't an indefinable mass of common behaviour (how is it even possible to "average" behaviour) falls outside of that with basically no way around it that's immediately apparent - that's because the interface is streamlined so much, it'll only focus on what about 90% of users do in any given situation.

The inability to pause a recap is a little odd, maybe they're using the same functionality that would otherwise be used for advertisements, which they are introducing soon on a free subscription tier anyway.

The thing missing from list is probably when something's taken off the service and then put back on. Which likely happened at some point even if Netflix owns the production.

So it's ironic that a service design methodology based on an a strawberry floating massive amount of user data can be unintuitive; it's sort of the equivalent of populism in design. It usually works though. You get these edge cases of things people do rarely but which are still important, that will be considered statistically insignificant to act upon but can still cause frustration with the service. Say for example with general accessibility issues in a certain audience, say those with sight or hearing impairment, that can make a lot of feedback, which is good and right, so you need focus testing for those groups. In general analytics alone don't pick up on these issues because the data can't know someone wanted to take a break from something and return to it, after all why would anyone possible stop watching Netflix?

"It should be common sense to just accept the message Nintendo are sending out through their actions."

Cashless payments!

I queue up in Tesco express, the guy ahead uses his card and it doesn't work, cue a long delay for everyone waiting. Then the next guy chooses to pay with a phone app, and that doesn't work either! The third guy's phone works, but he hasn't bother prepping it in the queue so he spends ages fumbling about. By now I'm slowly losing the will to live, but once finally served, I'm paid and out the door in seconds. Why? I used cash!

What you forget is the same issue happened on the tills with people paying money, usually because people took forever finding their money in the first place and then wanting to pay exact change and gooseberry fool like that. It's not got any worse, it's just the people holding things up have changed.

Software from big companies completely unusable due to simple bugs.

When I signed up to be Virgin Media it took 2 months to get access to online billing because their registration page always returned an error implying the password doesn't meet requirements. There was a long running thread on their forums which eventually figured out the hidden password requirements that didn't match the requirements listed on the page. Even after knowing this it wouldn't accept anything I tried, so I opened a ticket with support who were also unable to register my account and so elevated it to technical support who never replied to the ticket. I just kept trying every few weeks until eventually it let me in.

Last week I needed to send my phone away for repairs which involved a full factory reset. Upon setting it back up I've found that I can't setup Samsung Health, as the Sign In button goes straight to an error page implying my browser isn't compatible. It does this for every browser including Samsung's own. I found the support form for the app and filled it out only to be given an error message that it couldn't submit followed by promptly redirecting away to lose the form data. strawberry floating unbelievable. They have no support email address that I can find, and the "live chat" is a video call :dread: (what kind of maniac wants a video call for technical support??)

I've worked on a lot of web and mobile applications and registration / login is both simple and extremely important. Issues like the above would be "drop everything and you don't stop until it's fixed" level of priority... But apparently when you're a big enough company you can just stop giving a gooseberry fool.

When people repeat a funny quote from something like The Simpsons but insist on putting on a bad American accent, butchering it in the process.

Okay, before it was the Google Pixel phone being shoved into my face in every YouTube vid and now it's Chromebook. *Every* bloomin' time!

Well, not *every* time. But a lot.
