Got my own car insurance-related gripe now.

We had a claim back in December 2019. Driving my mum's car with two passengers, a guy ran a red light and I couldn't get out the way in time. He T-boned me(no context), wrecked the side of the car(because he was in a flaming Range Rover! Damage to his car was minimal, too) and scared the living hell out of all of us. Clearly his fault, guy got out, quickly gave details and promptly sped off up the road. We phoned insurance to put the claim through and were told it would almost certainly be a non-fault claim. My mum's car was written off and she bought a new one, we never heard anything else and thought no more of it. Job's a good 'un.

19 months later, we've gotten an e-mail to say they're going to be settling the claim as 50-50. Now this doesn't necessarily matter too much - we're almost two years down the line so the loading on my mum's insurance premiums for next year will be minimal and she's got PNCD anyway so she'll retain her bonus. But in principle I'm furious because it's an absolutely cut and dried case of 100% liability on the third party's side. This is a lazy attempt to avoid actually doing any of the utterly minimal investigation required to prove we're not at fault. So I'll no doubt be spending the next few days looking for traffic-cam footage, dredging up the pictures we took at the time to show damage to the vehicles, etc.

Parasitic banana splits Lazy bastards!

Actually, it's a legal requirement now that if you've been with your insurer for more than a year(may be slightly more, like two or three years) they need to put a piece in your renewal documentation asking you to think about looking around. Car insurance premiums have shot up this year by a significant amount across the board, especially with some of the FCA's rulings regarding pricing and whatnot affecting things.

Sincerely
Not a parasitic banana split

So how come quotes from other insurers, using the exact same details, are 2.5x lower?

Because different insurers price different risks items differently

Having said that, I'm sure there's bonuses that can get applied to new customers if the insurer is looking to get new customers in as well. But equally they could be doing that if trying to retain customers too.

Exactly what Tomous says, different insurers use different calculations and value different factors in different ways. For example, age is still a rating factor that almost all insurers use, but SAGA will value that completely differently to, say, Direct Line because their business model looks to compensate for age and attract older drivers.

Equally, other companies are tooled up to insure younger or new drivers and discount the ratings factors based around young age or license years. General Accident’s telematics policies or any other black box insurer are a good example of this(as an aside, for strawberry float’s sake don’t get one of these policies).

A final example is overheads and cost. This isn’t necessarily a ratings thing in and of itself but some insurers operate in an online only capacity and this hugely impacts insurance premium as call centre and staff overheads don’t need to be accounted for.

Often, having multiple lines of business with an insurer can engender a pretty big discount, for those who offer home, life or travel insurance as well. That’s not to say, of course, that insurers don’t offer introductory premiums to get you in the door, of course they do. This is loss leadership, and hardly endemic to the insurance industry on its own. As Errkal and I have pointed out, this practice is in the process of being stopped/severely limited by the FCA, but the impact is likely to be a general rise in all insurance premiums.

It’s not just a case of “they’re all parasites,” because a) the general public have shown themselves to be willing to shop around for a deal, and b) different companies have different strategies, otherwise there’d be no need for aggregator sites. You’d go on compare the market and get fifty prices at £500 or whatever and the industry would be completely decimated.

For you, perhaps looking at a broker or panel insurer like Adrian Flux would be best, as they tend to do the shopping around for you year after year.

I am a little confused though. Has your insurance premium gone up by 2.5x, or is it 2.5x more than competitive prices?

EDIT: also this should probably go without saying, but have a close look at levels of coverage being offered by the cheaper premiums - you never know what they won’t be including as standard.

I've said this about 40 bazillion times already, bicyclists doing near passes by me on narrow footpaths. Almost got wiped out by one today, I did not hear him approaching. Swear to god if this happens again and going to tear a strawberry floating strip off him. Absolute prick.

I started looking into universities for my possible year abroad. Japan has been removed from the list. I get that its probably covid related (as is the possibility that studying overseas may get cancelled all together) but its really frustrating when I've waited 20 years to go to university, pick the ideal degree and then can't experience any of the things I wanted to. I don't blame the university (whether its the UK or Japan that has removed the option) it's just disappointing

Cheers mate, I do have other options in Hong Kong, South Korea and Singapore (as well as places like Canada, Australia, New Zealand) but Japan is where I really want to be. All things considered it sounds like a real "first world problem" type of situation, especially in the middle of a pandemic. Still can't help but feel a bit deflated though. Oh well, at least I'll have the 2 week field trip (hopefully)

Tbh South Korea might be comparable in terms of the k pop culture and stuff we tend to import over here but sure sucks you can't go where you want. Depends what you're into I guess. Aren't you learning some Japanese history?

I'm doing East Asian studies so technically cover the whole region but the degree is pretty flexible so my focus has primarily been Japanese modules (history, literature and politics). Unless things change by the autumn (when we actually have to apply) then South Korea and Hong Kong will probably be my first choices when applying

Ebay - I put a Best Offer price in, it was rejected. Fair enough, I'll just see how the bidding progresses. I check back a couple of hours later and its sold under Best Offer at exactly the same price I offered :?

Sky internet, which is currently intermittent and the problem seems to be nationwide.

Downdetector has a huge spike on it's problem graph, some sites i can access sometimes, others i can't, then i find Grcade won't load, then it does.

Hope it gets sorted soon.

EDIT: Now downdetector can't be accessed, how ironic.

People who post youtube videos or other online "content" and title it in the third person.

"Streamer X reacts to this big news!" - Uploaded by Streamer X yesterday. I can see it's from you, why not just title it "I react to this big news"? strawberry float's sake.

I've noticed it's common on a lot of comedians' YT channels as well. "Comedian destroys Heckler" uploaded by said comedian, or "Standup McJokeface being FUNNY AF for 10 minutes straight" - uploaded by Standup McJokeface.

It's probably all seo, they're called branded keywords.
