I do remember the calculator seemed simplistic and so potentially misleading, it was just one of those "WHAT DO U SCORE?!" type threads where everyone waves around their eco-penis, in this case. It gave me minor fuzzies about stuff I already knew due to being a poor hermit and moved on.

At the end of the day anything that throws light on the issue and makes people think about there personal impact is a good thing.

People driving what are essentially perfectly normal road cars but who slow down to a strawberry floating crawl whenever there is a tiny bump in the road because they think they are going to scratch their precious machine.

You're in an M3 mate not a strawberry floating super car! :x

Having to repeatedly explain why I generally don't drink alcohol. Often to the same people. Things die down. Then it starts again. I know they mean well and are trying to get me to have a good time but they don't get that more often than not alcohol has the opposite affect on me and constantly badgering me to drink is spoiling my evening.

Please do not post this in the "No Context" thread

Oh yes this is a big one.

In the years since uni I have steadily decreased my drinking to the point where as of now I am essentially teetotal and it is a bizarre ritual to try and explain this to people. It seems like an alien concept to them which, frankly, I find quite alarming in itself. The idea that someone doesn't need or want booze to have a good time shouldn't been seen as something weird.

I went teetotal for a year or so when I was 18 after a period of unhappiness. It certainly helped level me back out.

Similarly, if you're someone who doesn't really eat biscuits/cake/sweets/junk food.
At work especially, the amount of hassle you get for it. :fp:
It doesn't matter how you frame it, people just won't take no for an answer, to the point where they're getting visibly annoyed or frustrated about what I choose to eat.
You get inundated with questions, and it's like they can't handle someone doing something differently to them. I just find it baffling.

i think its latent guilt, and stupidity. when i think back to any time ive actually wanted someone to do something theyre refusing to do, its typically because i want 'cover' of some sort for when im doing it. doesnt make it right thought, especially when its just eating some cake or having a drink. grow up :dread:

Put a brick in your petrol tank so you use less petrol every time you drive

It's so obvious now!

Why is it that whenever something gets stuck under a wiper blade it always does it directly in your eyeline?! Smears right across where I am trying to look today in the car and I'm on the motorway so there's bugger all I can do about it. It's never right at the top or bottom, always smack bang in the strawberry floating middle! :x

Back in February I got on a bus for the first time in probably a year or so - and it was strawberry floatin freezin! No heating on, the fat twat driver had the strawberry floatin window wide open next to him. Everyone sat on the bus freezin! Absolutely no way would i commute on a bus. How are they supposed to be encouraging people to get a bus when the conditions are like that?

There's always some banana split who never shuts up about this. Or wastes their money trying to peer pressure you to drink, by buying you a pint when you never really asked for it.

It's beyond annoying.

Buses are strawberry floating gooseberry fool and I pretty much hate them. I prefer trains. And yes I had to deal with Southern being awful for years. We should have things like trams and monorails instead.

I still use them anyway because I can't afford to learn to drive / run a car and my partner has given up her car as well because she also gets the train to work, even though her income went up considerably. She cycles between bus and train. It's just not necessary for a [nebulously] large amount of people in towns/cities.

She's healthier for it and we've saved a lot of money. I don't even want to begin to think about how much money I'd have pumped into car if I'd been driving for 13 years.

I also somewhat dislike kids being given vehicles as a right of passage. Just because you're a human being in the first world doesn't entitle you to a giant emissions budget to pootle you around at 60mph. I've never had any trouble getting to and from where I need to be on my feet and public transport; yes it isn't always as convenient, but in my view the cons of vehicle ownership (and manufacturer of fossil fuel vehicles 4-5 seats and strawberry floating SUVs) outweigh the pros that are quietly ignored or squandered by bollocks smearing about environmentalism and "you don't understand, it's different here" blahblah. I'm not talking about rural Scotland, I'm talking about running a car to drop kids off at school and go to Tesco's within a 5 mile radius. Most people aren't willing to look at the core of the problem because they will justify convenience at any expense, wittingly or unwittingly. I find that incredulously stupid.

It is a waste of resources and money for I'd say, at least 2/3 people who own cars. My opinion would change significantly if cars were smaller and electrically or solar powered and people weren't gooseberry fool to each other and could share them (car share/rental setups is something I have thought about learning to use those when it makes sense) but yes that's utopian thinking.

In terms of mechanical engineering, design and similar technical feats, I think cars should exist, but they should be part of culture and things like emergency services, not an everyday commodity that is indispensable to my way of living. Sorry but I really want to see the attitude to ho-hum vehicle ownership die, and it won't. People complain about infrastructure issues but won't address the absurdity of the car itself, which is the tail end of bigger problems, like geo-specific employment to carry out mundane admin tasks and managers managing managers, people driving to a specific location to dispense pieces of paper and type into a computer when they were already in a position to do that in the first place (there is almost no need for this approach to work anymore); centralised shopping and other economy/infrastructure inefficiencies that the car is a reactionary development in favour of continued awful infrastructure. It perpetuates consumer "pain points" because this makes two large industry verticals in cahoots (mass vehicle manufacture and gas/oil) insanely rich. They and industry lobbyists are absolutely invested in perpetuating the idea car ownership is essential making it almost impossible to compete with that impression with a modicum of practical and logical resource-oriented sense.

This isn't even getting into vehicular-related accidents/deaths, public health concerns (air quality) and other by products of the internal combustion car existing, undeniably so - as these things would simply not happen (they would not be possible) if the car wasn't dominating our streets near constantly. I didn't even think of this until after making these points but my mother wouldn't be disabled either (she was hit by a drunk driver and smashed up, given a 1/3 chance of recovery because she lost so much blood and needed a huge skin graft). The fact that incapacitated, stupid people (or normal stupid people, or totally ordinary people that have a fault or "bad luck" with their journey or whatever) are able to get into a motorised trojan horse on a whim and kill another person in order to get from A to B a bit faster is horrifying. I have none others to be killed in road accidents while on drugs (of course, the driver survived). Maybe cars should have integrated breathalyser tests to start the engine. There are answers to these things but they are not implemented because those ideas are impractical, barmy, complete nonsense etc. Well so was the idea of the car until everyone started buying them, now it's a huge problem that needs solving. Then there's the against out "freedoms" argument. At what point (and why) were people granted the "freedom" to put other people's lives at risk for the sake of expediting their journey?

For me, the benefit of getting to sit in my car by myself and not having to interact with or be near any other members of the general public massively outweigh any other concerns.

Again, so long as I didn't have to interact with anyone else, I'd be fine with this outcome
