It blows my mind that website or system owners don't see these things and don't seem to have an issue with how gooseberry fool they are.

Developers and designers generally don't like each other and don't collaborate enough which causes 99% of these sorts of issues. Also prioritisation of ads and ad impressions, whereby hoops are deliberately created to serve more ads in-between the functionality/information you actually want. It also helps analytics assess each stage of movements by through the site by logging each page and interaction as a separate event.

It has nothing do with usability and 100% to do with monetisation.

With the PS4 though, what I find more annoying tbh is Disney paying to have their app as the 1st in the TV/video section no matter what. So whereas previously the 1st app in the list would be the one you use most often, now it's always Disney, which introduces an extra step.

Funnily enough, of all the people, it's Nintendo who have gotten it right since the Wii U. You can arrange apps wherever you want, change the size of the icons, and create whatever folders you want, and they never move around. It even preserves positioning between "zoom" levels on 3DS! You can launch the console and in the games with zero loading times (which is most of them) you can be in a battle or level or whatever within literally 30 seconds. There is no other platform that does this from switching on (not counting standby) to playing.

I think the PS4 streaming menu has always been arranged by whoever pays them the most. The only streaming app I ever use is Plex and I've always got to scroll past every other one to get to it. The PS4 has a genuinely awful interface. The state of the Settings menu, too :slol:

Yeah it's just one giant text menu for loads of bitty things. At least the options are there, PS3 was similar.

Funny you mention that. I just presumed Netflix was no.1 because that's what I launch most often.

I don't see any ads on the PS4 (or any I notice at least) and that doesn't seem to interfere with me finding or accessing apps, it just seems to be purely down to bad design.

What's also gooseberry fool is what they've done with demos. Aside from the fact that barely any are available (a real step back from the previous generation), the demo section of the PSN store doesn't show all demos available. I mean what's the strawberry floating point. :fp:

Surely if you go to the effort of making a demo available, the key thing is people knowing about it and being able to access it. Hoping people stumble across it isn't a great method of promotion. Beggars belief. :fp:

Agree with Gecko on Nintendo's UI designs. The simplicity of them is the best thing about them. The stuff on them is immediately available.

The XB1 UI has improved over time, but it still nowhere near as user friendly as Nintendo's stuff.

Really annoyed now by the state of the Metro website.

Now they've made sure no one can access it with an adblocker, the pages are a mess with way, way too many ads which completely spoil the entire page.

I get them having a few ads on the page dotted around, but the sheer amount they have in place is beyond a joke, and trying to read an article now is an exercise in extreme patience.

So that makes it ok for it to be a battle to read the content with ease? Because it's free then it can be as crap a service as possible, and their users have no right to complain?

You might say that if they're so unhappy with it they should go else where, but how would metro know the reason for the diminishing readership? Direct customer feedback is by far the best way to understand how they feel about changes you've made.

You aren't the customer. You're the product.

Kind of. If no one goes to the site then it doesn't matter how many ads there are. They need viewers willing to be able to 'spend' their clicks and time to generate the revenue from the ads.

Exactly, what they've done is render the site almost unusable.

Thing is, with how much this happens it clearly isn’t as hated by people as it is by you. I don’t understand how people can tolerate it but clearly they do otherwise site that do it wouldn’t be in existence.

I miss the days whenever sites weren't so horribly laid out for ad revenue purposes.

I've noticed as the years have gone by, such is the sheer amount of advertising, that more and more websites bring my iPad Air 2 to its knees. Sometimes the browser will just automatically close, or really occasionally the screen will black out, a loading wheel will appear, and the iPad will take you back to the home screen. I think it tends to be because of that initial hit where a website tries to load up a bazillion adverts, videos, and graphics all at once and there's either not enough RAM or the processor can't handle it.

Or like Eurogamer recently, that introduced hidden adverts - so if you tap any part of the screen it launches an advert or takes you to another website entirely. Eurogamer used to be my go-to website in the '00s and now I visit maybe once or twice a month (usually because of a Digital Foundry article).

Sounds like an Apple problem.

I have all the ads blocked via extensions.
