Wasps!

Was walking to town today when i felt something on my leg, looked down to see a wasp had attached itself and was busy stinging the gooseberry fool out of me for absolutely no reason!

Still hurts even now, i should have worn trousers today instead of shorts.

Wasps are bastards.

The only insects I hate more are earwigs.

I have been staying at my in laws for a few days (to be fair that's usually the central subject of my posts in this thread, not just the intro ). I could hear a weird scrabbling above the cabinets in the kitchen and thought it may be a wasp in its death throes or something. I have a phobia of wasps and bees that I've been working on over several years. I'm much better with bees but wasps are still problematic for me - I hate eating outside at this time of year for instance because I know I'm going to have to embarrass myself by jumping up at least once.

Any way, turns out it wasn't A wasp, it was several hundred wasps in a nest in their kitchen roof.

:dread:

In fairness to the stripy banana splits they're pretty docile. I can quite happily walk down the side entrance of the house less than ten feet away and they don't care. I thought I'd be getting attacked constantly because I'm so close. I've even managed to deal with one getting in the house which is a big improvement for me.

We've got a bumblebee nest near our bathroom window. They are the most docile things, you can't even hear them buzzing unless the window is open and they don't fly in even if the windows wide open.

If it was wasps though? I'd burn the entire street to the ground.

I'd just come off a work call the other day, and muted my headset, turned around to put the kettle on only to see the biggest bee I've ever seen in my life enter the window and thrash about. I'd say this bee was easily the size of an entire adult thumb, so big was it that it's lower body was hanging vertically as it moved around. I'm so glad I was off that call becuase I could stop swearing becuase of how huge the bee was. It stayed up high, and normally with a bee I'd get a magazine or something and just gently guide it out the door or window, but I was going nowhere near this bee. I got my metal mouse mat and wafted the air enough to move it to the door, and it eventually left.

Hornets are bigger than that, had one in my window once, it was bigger than king kong's first dump of the day.

If you want to encourage bees grow some lavender. We have some out the front and at this time of year there are loads of them all over it every day.

I like bees, but I don't like being near bees if you get me. I don't like being near bugs in general honestly.

We get lots of honey bees in our garden, and a few bumbles, it's really nice.

With flies, wasps etc getting inside I'm like "just get out of this open window you dumb little strawberry float" but with bees I'm much more "this isn't where the pollen is, you're clearly lost, I'll just give you a little help out the window there"
