This is why I find it weird to stay in really expensive hotels on holiday. I can just relax in my own house for free for 2 weeks if all I'm going to do it lounge around. I plan on spending as little time as possible in my hotel and being out and about in whatever country I'm in. It just needs to be a bed and a shower.

I'm the same as you for but some people just want some comfort next to a pool in the sun with a 2 week break from their mundane job. It would bore me but I do understand why people do it.

I know somebody that every year has a two week holiday in Greece. It is always to the exact same resort at the exact same time of year. They’ve done that every single year for well over a decade now. When there she just relaxes near the swimming pool, nothing else.

I am not knocking it, she (and her family) enjoy it so it is up to them. I would be bored shitless though.

We asked the same person once “don’t you want to go and see other things?” and she couldn’t understand why. We mentioned things like the Grand Canyon, the Great Barrier Reef, the Great Wall of China, Chichen Itza etc but she just looked blank and said “but I can just see photos of those without having to bother going there”. :fp:

And yes, she is a Brexiter. :slol:

Had this aimed at me yesterday - casual conversation about getting up in the morning somehow gets turned in to a 'you've not got kids so your opinion on sleep is invalid' kind of conversation.

"Unless you've got kids, do NOT talk to me about being tired. You have NO idea what tired is. NO IDEA."

YOU CHOSE TO HAVE KIDS FFS, it's like complaining of a hangover as a result of a heavy night out and looking for sympathy :fp:

It's the same people who complain about having to do diy in to the small hours for years on end - you CHOSE to move in to a derelict old building, the strawberry float did you expect?

------------

On the holiday conversation above - we're firmly in the active holiday camp, I love a good road trip, visiting a load of interesting places and doing as much as we can in the time we have (our wedding trip in Arizona was amazing) We also have our lazier holidays (usually Mexico, not the same place every time though). I've been 5 times now over a long space of time, and I've done a lot of the big ruin sites, local towns, senotes etc, so when we went for our first anniversary last year we decided to do strawberry float all for 2 weeks. The place cost an absolute fortune to go to, but we alleviated the guilt by reasoning we were eating at 5 star restaurants 3 times a day, worked our bollocks off for it and deserved to do strawberry float all for once. When it costs RichardUK.jpg a day to be somewhere like that then you're less inclined to go elsewhere. I'd be strawberry floating fuming if we went and hadn't been out to see a lot of what the area had to offer on other trips though. Like when my mate went to Egypt for 2 weeks and didn't go to see the pyramids just down the road :fp:

Pretty sure these are the same people who also exhibit crappy parenting skills, and when someone suggests an alternative method, they get the 'you don't have kids so you don't understand' speech.

To me, a holiday is when you are away relaxing on a beach or around a pool being waited on. Get away from normal life for a week and come back refreshed.

I don't consider city breaks or travelling trips holidays because generally you aren't resting or relaxing, it's all go, wandering around on your feet all day sight-seeing and stuff.

I do think there's place for both, though I generally prefer the pool/beach variant. I am generally not interested in seeing the sights or travelling.

I did enjoy mooching around Amsterdam and Bruges for a few days last year but I didn't feel refreshed or relaxed once I came back.

Current annoyances:

-People that aren't interesting enough on their own that feel the need inform us of their partner's opinion on everything as well as their own

-People whinging about minor personal problems as if they are world ending. I don't care. I am personally having a 1/10 year at best yet you do not hear me crying about it or looking for sympathy.

-People complaining about traffic and accidents making them late. You choose to live 20 miles and several A roads away. Move closer to work or move to a company closer to where you live if you don't like it.

And yes that pyramid story is especially facepalm worthy.

It's about as much of a hot take as Ad's friends choosing to have children and then moaning about it.

Guess it depends on the industry, or the job, really. It's not exactly a prosperous job market at the moment :shifty:

Depends how ENRAGED they are about it all, too. If you've got a long commute you should really be ready for everything to go wrong, so you shouldn't moan about it that much. Just "tch, commuting, amirite" and leave it at that.

Get strawberry floated. It's too expensive to live nearer work, and there are no decent jobs where I live. This is why commuting exists. Now if people could stop driving like strawberry floating idiots, we could all get on just fine.

Cool.

I have no issue with people needing or wanting to commute for work, as long as they appreciate that it comes with the caveat that sometimes there will be delays (yes, due to reckless driving and general stupidity). It just comes with the territory. It's the incandescent outrage and disbelief, like there's this almost mythical one in a million chance of an accident occurring on a Very Busy Road which tens of thousands of people use each morning.

Drumstick, as someone with a 20 mile, 1 hour commute to work, that often gets delayed because of traffic and accidents, I'd just like to say...

I'm moving jobs in just over a week because of it, to somewhere 15 minutes away from where I live 8-)

What kind of job is it? I currently have like an hour and a half commute (on a train, rather than driving, because A) strawberry float motorway commuting and B) I can play Zelda the whole way) because there's nowhere near me that does anything similar to what I went to university for.

The money sort of makes up for it, but it's definitely a short-term solution until I can get something better.

Drumstick, as someone with a 0.1 mile, 5 minute walk to work, that never gets delayed because of traffic and accidents, I'd just like to say...

You've chosen a very strange thing to get annoyed by. It's not practical for everybody to live close to their workplace and moaning about traffic is a pretty standard thing for humans to do.

It's also pretty standard for parents to moan about their kids from time to time.

It is. And it’s pretty strange to get annoyed by people who are annoyed about their kids.

I get annoyed if my commute is longer than 15 minutes each way. I realise how #blessed I am that I have such a short commute, it must be a nightmare for some of you, you have my sympathies.
