Moggy wrote:This is simultaneously irritating and amusing, but on the whole it's funny. I was ( ) a member of a Bristol City forum and started getting "stalked" by one of the people there. He'd follow me around adding little reactions to all of my posts. I pointed it out to mods who did nothing. This has gone on for months.

I snapped earlier and sent him a PM telling him to strawberry float off. He must have reported me as I was permabanned with my IP address blacklisted about 30 minutes later.

Hilarious that somebody can spend months bullying somebody else but when they snap it's the victim that gets banned.

This but it happened to me in real life and the "mods" did nothing (actually, the harasser was a mod on their Slack, which was part of the problem, this guy had a channel through which they could harass me with nobody looking AND act gooseberry fool in person) even when it escalated to unwanted physical contact. In the end I snapped, called them a banana split (after numerous ageist and ableist comments and obvious trolling) and threw a pint of beer against a pub wall, then broke down crying after they lost their gooseberry fool with me because I touched their arm and apologised to them (my harasser). Basically completely fell apart after months and months of grief from the same person, constantly trying to reconcile their behaviour amicably with them, which only fed their obsession/hatred for me. That's the shitty thing if someone like that gets their hooks into you, is that they wear you down and you just cannot understand why they have such a massive bone to pick with you over seemingly nothing.

I just left, then somehow found the courage to go back, then left again. All a colossal waste of effort thanks to one strawberry floater. They finally implemented an "acceptable use policy" / "code of conduct" about a year later for the physical space and the guy is probably still there.

The official line was that we had both "voluntarily suspended membership for 1 month" but the truth was I left and they were hopefully told to go away a bit while it all got swept under the carpet and calmed down, which didn't really solve anything. 1 month was nothing to this guy as he'd been there for something like 10 years and had plenty of money to pour into the place on a much higher membership tier.

Yeah, just stay the strawberry float away from some people if you struggle to understand why one person will stick to you like mud and treat you like crap. It's bad when it happens on the Internet, it's even worse when you're unable to access a whole place/service/amenity/resource because of them proactively making that difficult for you. And you spent money doing that. Harassment sucks and it's not OK.

Amazing to think that some places have literally no harassment/safeguarding policies in place like that because they just "hope everyone can get along and treat each other with respect" and then lo and behold when someone doesn't do that, they haven't got a clue what to do about it. Tremendously naive.

I've had similar before myself (though it's not happened for a fair few years now), been trolled by different people on different forums, and after being pushed to the point of retaliation, i often ended up being made to look the bad guy.

Also, as Gecko says, it can happen in real life too, i had it with my own brother, he treated me like crap for years, and when i eventually told him where to go, i was then labelled as a monster.

God growing up with brothers it was like that too.

"You're just as bad as each other."

Well, really, I mean, this dude just punched me in the face / smashed my stuff up or whatever.

Naturally I don't play nice with aggressive dudes, and let's be honest, it's always a dude with delusions of power/grandeur or a massive inferiority complex.

It's not quite as bad, but sometimes it feels worse when somebody in a situation of authority just avoids the subject entirely because "people gonna be gooseberry fool". Well maybe they would be less gooseberry fool if someone just told them to stop.

I guess I'll quote this harassing guy, "everyone says things like that to me. Just lol it off"

I.e. "It's not me, it's you, you're too sensitive." If I could count the number of times bullies have said that.

I guess I've come to understand, the way some people view the world, everyone is putting themselves out there to get hurt, and they better just suck it up because of, I dunno, psychological Darwinism or some crap. Whatever can't kill you can only make you stronger etc.

That is until people suffering serious abuse online actually go and kill themselves, that is. Emotions are real, and they can hurt, and someone can erode and damage you through shitty behaviour.

Anyway I have no idea why I'm talking about this, I suppose I'm just chiming into to say that, it's always irritated me a little what people get away with in terms of treating others poorly for their own amusement. Actually it came up on the radio this morning, something to do with parenting and how kids get on social media and suddenly have to deal with shitty people amplified times a million. I'm glad I didn't grow up with that gooseberry fool, it was bad enough in my own family and at school etc, and just generally dealing with being a pretty vulnerable kid that wasn't mollycoddled by any means, in fairness, my parents were barely involved in any of that.
