Today in work, some guy phoned me to tell me he would come down to our old office as he wanted to leave something in. Told him we moved a lot of years ago, and that the old office has been bull dozed now.

I spilt strawberry floating tea on my laptop keyboard. Took all of 5 seconds before the screen jumbled, rolled and went black like one of those 'lol, this is so fake' technical glitches you see on TV dramas. Well nope, it looks spot on.

Turned it upside down and let the tea drip out before putting a hairdryer to it.

TOUCHWOOD it's now working again...for now.

Now that's just a waste of good tea.

Don't use a hairdryer. It pushes the moisture further into the mechanisms/logic board. Instead you should use a vacuum to draw the moisture out.

I find not spilling tea on her laptop is the best method.

Did the tea have milk in it? It makes a difference due to leaving a conductive residue as the water evaporates.

If it's just water with electronics you're always fine as long as the machine isn't on and you full dry it out. If the machine is on you have to hope it shorts the battery before frying other parts but it might live. If it's something with sugar in it you're strawberry floated.

Drying out will take more than a day. Rice does strawberry float all. Airing cupboard is your best bet.

Thankfully it’s not worth much (£200) so not a complete disaster and I only yesterday backed up important documents.

It was working when I turned it off but I guess I will know for sure tomorrow when it’s on for a sustained time. First time ever I’ve spilt something on a computer. Guess this is a sign it’s all downhill from here.

Also, when that happens you can turn the laptop upside down immediately so the liquid settles underneath the keykaps instead of flowing in.

I spilt beer on a friends laptop at a party once. I didn't tell them it was me (he was a very angry German who had a tendency to get stoned, fall asleep and wake up with a burnt pizza and lose his gooseberry fool) but I saved it that way.

It's good there was no sugar. Sugar is also electrolytic and when it dries into a tacky substance it will create shorts. This is why coke or orange juice in a laptop is basically FUBAR.
