On the same subject, that Sky Bingo ad voiced over by the failed Xfactor contestant Ryland is the single most irritating ad I've ever seen, he sounds like an extremely camp male version of Janet Street Porter

Not seen him on More Talent, but 2 weeks ago I did watch him in some programme called "In For a Penny", where he does a halfhearted gameshow on the street in various places around the country. So for example they had people filling up their cars at a petrol station and if they could stop the pump precisely on, say, £20, ITV would pay for the fuel.

I don't mind people's take on their name for the car (LW15 DOC coming soon ).. but what I don't get is when it's model of the car too.

Just been looking at an article which was supposed to have featured a great piece of weather footage, that is, it would have been had the individual filming it tilted their phone 90 degrees so that it was shot in landscape mode rather than portrait.

Why do people shoot videos in portrait mode? All you get is a little narrow piece of footage with huge empty borders either side! WHY CAN'T THEY FILM STUFF PROPERLY?!

Portrait is useful for a few situations but for virtually everything else landscape is king.

Cameras should just capture an entire square of footage, essentially over-scanning the image at all times. You can then choose the desired framing for playback by picking a 16:9 (or whatever) window across the source footage in whatever orientation you want.

What annoys me more is when you have that thin window frame for the video, but then either side is that utterly ridiculous effect where the video is then copied to the background, blurred, then stretched to fill out the rest of the screen.

Okay yeah that wins the game of video presentation hell

What's baffling is that doing that takes more effort than just not doing it

Square video exists for two reasons: it increases engagement by having more visible on the screen at once (including ads), and you don't have to bother designing your layout to adapt to screen proportions.

At least it's better than portrait. Instagram is currently trying to do something with their entire Instagram video thing being in portrait, but that's more to do with narcissists getting in more of their six pack or cleavage than any sensible film theory.

It pisses me off, but I've learnt to accept its not always wrong (for example, it's undeniably easier to film single handed in portrait, even if it really isn't that hard to do it properly). My girlfriend's dad filming a parade in portrait though. I mean for for strawberry floats sake, it goes left to right mate.

Playing the Switch in bed last night and having a great time making some super progress in FFXII, when out of nowhere a hulking great moth appears from the inky black ether around us and lands smack in front of me on top of the screen. Fright of my strawberry floating life!

I really bounced off it hard back on the PS2 but although I'm only a few hours into it I'm enjoying it more this time around. Too early to judge it but I'm confident it won't be too terrible!

I heard some Destiny's Child on the radio this morning and it has been bugging me ever since now. It's their pronunciation of a few particular words that is getting to me! The song was Survivor and the lyric in question was:

You thought I wouldn't grow without ya, now I'm wiser!

It's the way they was "wouldn't" - it sounds like wu-int and it was really strawberry floating annoying me!

When I got into work I listened to some more of their stuff and they do the same thing elsewhere as well, on Independent Women there are lyrics such as this from the chorus:

Girl I didn't know you could get down like that

But "didn't" sounds like di-int.

I certainly don't think that every song in the world need to use perfect "RP" pronunciation or anything, the vast array of different accents, sounds and lyrical stylings that are out there are something to be embraced - but something about this was just really getting to me today!

I generally don't mind a bit of Destiny's Child, in the vast world of pop/RnB acts that are out there they certainly sit nearer the top than the bottom, and I don't ever recall having this problem with listening to their stuff before so perhaps I'm just getting to be old and grumpy - correcting peoples pronunciation, is this what my life has become!?

Not sure if any of their songs have the word "one" in it but I'm hopeful they use the correct "wun" (as in scwun) pronunciation.
