WRC highlights and Great Model Railway Challenge are the two things I've been watching recently on My5.

Occasionally Channel 5 airs some really good films but I can't be arsed sitting through the commercials. Or sometimes commercials AND the news. ITV does that as well. I refuse to watch another movie on ITV after the hatchet job they did on Jurassic World just so they could air the thing at 8pm.

Yes, i live in the past, there's less bs here even despite the annoying ads. ;)

Channel 5 is just the home of poverty porn, there's nothing on there but endless versions of "look at how these poor people live" or "look at how these fat strawberry floaters live" or "look at the gooseberry fool these bailiffs have to put up with" :lol:

“Ok boomer” suddenly appearing on every innocuous Twitter and YouTube post, or towards anyone that’s apparently 30+ and a bit critical of something or other.

‘That kettle looks a bit rubbish.’
‘okay boomer.’

I use the All4 app quite a lot and there are endless adverts, even iPlayer has adverts for other BBC shows at the beginning (although mercifully they can be skipped!). Netflix is the only one I use that doesn't have ads.

I have a pihole that blocks the all4 adverts, and chromecast doesn't show the iPlayer related show "adverts" so I didn't know about that. Fair enough.

How does that work?

Do you install it on a Raspberry Pi and route your web connection through it like a VPN?

I know next to nothing about this stuff.

Boomers are, at the youngest, 55 years old though.

The boomer mindset has no age restrictions.

Boomer = Gammon

Gen X = Big Mac

Millenial = Avocado

Gen Z = Nothing, the Boomers destroyed the planet before they got to choose a food

How does that work?

Do you install it on a Raspberry Pi and route your web connection through it like a VPN?

I know next to nothing about this stuff.

When you make a request to visit a domain, e.g. grcade.co.uk, there's a system called DNS that converts "grcade.co.uk" into the IP address (94.23.1.68 in grcade's case) of the computer that your computer wants to talk to. Organisations like your internet provider or Google maintain DNS servers that provide this service. DNS servers maintain a database of records of the IP address that belongs to domains, and if it doesn't know, it can pass the request to an "upstream" DNS provider. This process can continue several times if each server in turn doesn't have a record, right up to the "root" DNS servers.

Pihole is like running your own DNS server, except it deliberately ignores requests for domains it knows to be used solely for advertising. All other requests it passes upstream to a DNS provider of your choice (I believe it defaults to either Google or Cloudflare). You install it on a server on your home network, I have it on my home media server but it's lightweight enough to work on a raspberry Pi, hence the name. Then you tell your router to tell all the DHCP clients on your network that the Pihole should be use for DNS name resolution.

DHCP is the system that hands out local IP addresses to devices on your network. You may have seen devices say something like "obtaining IP address" when you join a network via wifi. This is the device asking the router to give it an IP via DHCP. As it does this, it also asks the router what server it should for DNS name resolution, and if you configured it as above it will use the Pihole. This means you don't have to configure each device individually, just the router.

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

+1 for the boomer dislike. It's just another device to drive a further wedge between generations, instead of actually trying to have a discourse and change peoples' minds the old fashioned way with debate and reason.

It’s amazing that we have had years of horror stories about millennials but the second people start on the boomers it becomes “oh no, let’s all work together”.

strawberry floating boomers. :x
