Something similar happened to us once. Our vegetarian sausages were substituted with real ones so we obviously got them refunded.

I'd have loved to have understood the thought process of whoever decided that was a good substitute. Although I'm sure that in reality they were just a prick who didn't give a gooseberry fool.

To be fair, it's probably some minimum wage paid worker being measured against metrics on completing X number of orders in Y amount of time, with 100% substitutes offered at all times.

Consider that the machines that take cash also take cards, so card payers don't care which checkout they use (and will use the next one that becomes free). You only need one person paying cash to potentially be stuck waiting, or two to form a queue.

When I have to go to the supermarket, it's usually because we need something last minute so will be a basket at most. I want as little time in the shop as possible with as little human interaction as I can get away with. I usually dash around the shop cussing at people walking slowly, huffing if I've got to ask someone to move their tracksuit clad far arse out of the way. I will then make my way to the self serve checkout because I want to be out of there as quickly as possible. If some scumbag is in there with either kids and/or a trolley, then they can strawberry float off.

That's exactly it. Plus the scanner they use is the thing that tells them what to substitute with if something is out of stock. They can use common sense and pick something else, but overriding the machine is tedious, and as you say, they're on a strict time limit.

My partner's Mum ordered some birthday candles and a cake. The candles were 5 and 2 for the birthday age and they substituted the 5 for a "happy birthday" candle and left the 2.

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

This. I million times this. It's the quick lane, for baskets and people with hardly anything to buy. My local Asda is bad for this. I often pop in on the way home from university and all 4 self-service machines are tied up with people doing their weekly shop. Thanks, you've just used turned the fast lane into a regular lane.

I've never seen anything denote them specifically as quick check outs. The Sainsbury's I use most regularly has dedicated basket only check outs, but they're manned lanes, and frequently not open, again.

Asda where I shop specifically labels it as a quick checkout. Or at least it did until until the store got reorganised at the end of last year, I'm not sure if the sign is still there.

Please do not post this in the "No Context" thread

My Tesco used to have a baskets-only policy for the self-checkouts but I guess the useless banana split staff there couldn't be bothered to enforce it so now it's just a free-for-all nightmare. I strawberry floating hate my Tesco. Their toilets are disgusting as well.

Aldi are better for some things, Lidl better at others. They are usually pretty much next door to each other so it's not a big bother to do both.

100% this. In our Sainsburys - I assume in all the larger stores - as an alternative to the app you can pick up a handset and use that instead. Dead easy.
