Out of curiosity, I checked out a livestream from a pretty big guitar community YouTuber. Never done this before.

Donations totalled 500+ dollars for basically 20 minutes of rambly crap talking.

People buying recognition through one-way para-social relationships with the performer and "community" to stave off their own loneliness brought about by the same technologies they use to do so. I'm afraid it's Guy Debord all over again:

I used to watch a few twitch channels quite regularly until I resolved a nagging doubt I had and remembered the above, particularly about technologies of separation and "lonely crowds". They are pretend friendships you have to pay to be in, which give you a sense of belonging but require continuous exploitation of the lonely to maintain. I got fed up of them every 30 seconds going "hey [INTERNET USERNAME], thanks for the follow/subscribe!" This relates to the friendship discussion in the other thread in that it is far from a reciprocal arrangement. I am a fairly solitary person, but even I recognised I didn't need to engage in a parasitic relationship that was drawing my attention under the guise of social contact.

I used to put twitch on while painting miniatures and ended up spending more time looking at that than actually doing anything. There are a couple of good ones which are just tv shows on 24/7 like the Bob Ross and Mystery Science Theatre/Rifftrax channels but they have too many adverts that you have to pay more to not see. Now i've switched to audibooks and documentaries so I can learn about things and experience good stories instead of all that.

I just watched an episode of Limmy's Show and I didn't find it laugh out loud funny but there was something kind of endearing and moreish about it.

The Homemade Show series is a bit of a change from the original show but I loved the recent series he did.

This is a brilliant post, articulates exactly what I was thinking about this whole para-social interactions subject.

I can't decide whether I find the whole thing exploitative or not. A conscientious decision is being made to open up donations, but I get that people are making their own decisions in donating, and it's not fair for me to tell people how they should use their money. I'm veering towards 'yes it is' on this. I can't help but feel that.

It's a really difficult one because, as you say, it's up to people how they want to spend their money and sometimes trying to tell them "no" gets you nowhere. I don't have a massive amount of experience with it yet but I started a YouTube channel last November and within days of setting up a PayPal account with my channel's email address (soley set up for sales on an online store), someone sent me money out of the blue, just leaving a note saying "thanks for the YouTube stuff". A few months ago, someone asked me if I was developing kits yet on a particular drum module (I create custom presets for electronic drums) - I said I don't have one yet and jokingly said something along the lines of "if you want to throw in for a module, be my guest!" I totally should have thought about it before doing so as they replied back effectively saying "yeah, how do we go about doing this?"

On the one hand, this isn't a regular occurence for me at the moment and this is people outright going out of their way to do this with their cash. But seeing people completely willing to do so and obviously getting something they feel they want from it, I'm not surprised that giving people an option to do it easily and in a way is something that a creator is happy to do. I'm not super comfortable with the idea of it, I'd rather sell something, well, not tangible as they're digital downloads, but something that you actually get some use out of. But I do get it and I struggle to work out exactly where I'd draw the line and can't really say I could draw the line for someone else either. Donations for shout-outs do feel a bit much for me but it depends on whether you think they're just trying to fill a want or need for themselves in a negative way or whether they just genuinely want to support your creative endevours and want to do so without expecting anything in particular in return.

I've got a wireless pair of Sennheiser over the ear headphones which I've had for probably over 3 or 4 years now. The sound quality is pretty great, but they don't use Bluetooth which is rather annoying in it's self - they have some sort of hocky puck type transmitter that requires power and needs to be plugged into the 3.5mm jack of the device you want to listen to. I think they were from the generation just before it became more prevalent for Bluetooth to be the standard, if I remember correctly.

Not too much bother in practice since I only use them occasionally at night on the TV when I don't want to make too much noise, but it's still a shame I'm restricted in how I use them.

I have no idea what would have caused them to split like that when I used them barely once a month. strawberry float sake.

I thought I had the same headphones judging by your description. But they weren't.

That's the kind of wear you would expect after a year or so of continued use. Unfortunately they do crack after a time.

I think it's very thin polyurethane I.e. Fake leather, which always does this eventually. It will eventually break down into a million minuscule pieces and get everywhere. Thankfully you can sometimes find replacements by just looking up the headphone number especially for sennies, or even make your own!

Buying printer ink!

Argos had none in stock, and there was none to be found anywhere else.

In the end i had to spend £15 on amazon, and delivery time is 2 weeks! FFS!

I only bought the printer last year so it's not as if it's an obsolete piece of hardware!

Our printer has been relocated to the garage tip pipe of shame for ink crimes. Turned it off, turn it on again.. better use half the ink up just switching on! That'll be £50 please!
