Entering a competition now.

In the good old days, it would be a case of enter your email address, click enter and you're done.

Head on over to our Facebook page, post 34 photos of you in a homemade costume made from milk bottles (glass ones), post the pictures on Instagram with the following 50 tags. Head over to our Twitter page, like follow and retweet that, move house, cut off one of your limbs and swap it with a friend, marry that friend, post the wedding on ticktock with an original song youve written and then had recorded by Paul McCartney in drag. Remix the song on our MySpace page. Every song you record is an entry and you can enter up to 10,000 times! The competition closes in an hour and well announce the winners of the socks next year. Good luck!!

Beforehand simply spreading the word of the competition was publicity enough, now the entrants have to promote it themselves too.

I don't think I've used facebook more than a handful of times in the last 10 years.
Even then it was just a casual glance to see if my account was still active.

I liked Facebook when it first started - I think I joined in 2006 and it was a good way to keep in touch with uni friends as we had all just graduated, but I think I gave up on it pretty much entirely by about 2010.

I still check it every now and then to see if anyone has posted anything of value or to see what the "your memories of this day" thing has to show but it's usually not worth it

Messenger is a primary way of staying in touch with people, and (regrettably) it is also ine of the better ways to keep engaged with cultural events and occasions within your community. I personally find Facebook really useful for jobs and flat hunting if you're in a pinch, though would obviously rather not use it if I can help it.

I've completely ignored the "stories" feature on Facebook (I only have a pseudonym account for groups and page management) since they bought Instagram so I just felt, what's the point, everyone's using that.

That is why I'm very careful with things I like or retweet. Don't want people to see the darker side of me (if the general side of me is the light) as it might just come back to bite me and the image I want to present. It's also why I won't use the likes of Twitter and Facebook on my phone, as the amount of accidental likes I've given to images on Instagram is a lot. Fortunately, I always manage to see I've done that, but there's every chance I might miss something.

I hit the point of stopping caring on Twitter. I don't use facebook, but if you don't want to see what I'm liking then just unfollow me. I mostly tweet in Japanese anyway now and it's all VRChat gooseberry fool anyways.

Frankly if someone decides not to do business with me or hire me because of some random tiny bit of shite I posted on the Internet months or years previously they can go and do one. I'd never want to work with a client/employer like that, and no I don't need their money. I treat the internet just like anything I might do or say in public, I'm totally honest about myself and what I do. It's the only way to live in my opinion, especially if you have anxiety. I very much know what that paralysing fear/paranoia is like. I once literally smacked my head into a lamppost repeatedly because I was so fed up of thinking that way. I was 19, I try to to avoid lampposts now, my mortal enemy.

I've erred more towards option 2, having recently gotten rid of my Facebook completely.

It's more the way that these kind of social features are making their way into other platforms, where I may want to just use it to catch up on news or entertainment, but they insist I log in and then publish activity about what I do to other users or the people posting the content, and social platforms have standardised a model where you aren't asked if you want your activities published, it's just part of the terms of using the service, or you have to opt out.

I just don't like it when websites aren't clear about what others will be able to see about your activity, or don't even give you the option to go about in a discrete way.

Yeah, I totally understand what you mean, by the way data collection/marketing loops, gamification, and general web 2.0 / social media stuff finding their way into strawberry floating everything we consume.

Often, it's not long before something useful and cool becomes just another social media thing for venture capitalists to swoop down on and monetise hard. Time to leave when that happens.

I definitely recommend using the Facebook encapsulation plugins on FF/Chrome these days, seeing as vast swathes of the Internet use the Facebook tracking pixel and like button to build even more data up on your profile. I can't tell you the number of times I've entered, for example, grcade.co.uk into my address bar while wasting time on reading some bullshit comments on Facebook, only for Firefox to load that in the Facebook container. Why? Because every time you do it while browsing Facebook, they log that as your exit destination. You go to a website that uses the FB tracking pixel or like button, they log your visit to that site, and then you go back to Facebook again.

Pretty much if you use Facebook daily they have a good majority of your browsing activity for that day, it's strawberry floating scandalous, but there it is.

Chrome moving to blocking all cookies by default (except for Google cookies ) was a good move, knowing that's how the Internet basically works now. It's not news however, that gooseberry fool has been going on since the mid 90s, just not rolled in with the massive amount of personal information people give away. It was going to happen but, I'm a "digital nomad"/online business/pro or whatever you want to call that, it's part of what I do and I have to do it, but everyone else, they barely even know (or care) it's happening.

Well, I guess everyone has a sexual side, so such could be considered normal. But is it normal to share your preferences with complete strangers?

I only have Facebook, and the only reason I have that is because of messenger. About 2 years ago I reconnected with 2 friends from my teen years that live miles away and I'd hate to lose contact again. If it weren't for them I wouldn't bother with it.

You can deactivate your FB account and the Messenger account stays active.
