As someone who worked retail for 9 years I'm legitimately surprised that there aren't more assaults by shop assistants on customers.

The way a lot of customers treat retail (And fast food employees as well from what I hear) is utterly disgusting. strawberry float national service, there should be a mandatory six month front line retail job for everyone growing up just so they know how to treat people.

The number of my staff that got verbal abuse, or were made to feel like gooseberry fool by entitled banana splits is ridiculous. Mostly grown ass men and women shouting at kids just out of school.

strawberry float anyone that treats retail staff like they are beneath them. I always give shop staff a lot of respect because I know the gooseberry fool they go through and if someone is grumpy at work it's most likely either a shitty job/boss or shitty customers that have made them that way.

I've worked in customer service roles all my adult life. That saying is utter bullshit.

Worked in a shop for 5 years. Grown men and women losing their gooseberry fool over stupid things was part and parcel of working there. It is never a good look.

Agree with all of this, especially the bolded.

It sucks when you're on the receiving end of that stress and you've done nothing wrong though.

"The customer is always right" has empowered people who have little importance elsewhere in their life, believe they can treat retail workers like gooseberry fool and feel like a big person. People are the worst.

I only ever worked in retail for a couple of months during my first summer at university. I was a sales assistant in a computer shop (the imaginative title for the chain of stores was "The Computer Shop" ) - it wasn't a terrible experience but I definitely wouldn't want to do it again and compared to other areas of retail I can imagine it was pretty chilled out.

I just don't get the mindset of people who are dicks to retail workers. Even in the situation where you are in a shop to deal with a problem or issue with something you have bought then the chances are it's not the individual workers fault so just chill the strawberry float out.

I believe it's usually the people who have never worked in retail who behave like this. I'm on my third customer service based job (I need to get out of it to be fair because I'm always moaning  ) and I would never complain about anything. Maybe it's turned me too 'nice' because even if a food establishment has got my order wrong, I won't say anything because in my head I'll be thinking, 'ah they're probably stressed'.

The fact of the matter is, you should always treat people nice, even if it is a complaint, as you do not know what they're currently going through.

The most I've ever experienced (Both as a customer myself and when working) is a little surliness and an assistant that clearly didn't want to be there. Certainly in my professional capacity I've spoken to staff about how they carry themselves in front of customers.

Pretty much. People with little to no influence or power over anything meaningful like to exert what little control they feel they can over the 17 year old kids that work a 4 hour shift on a Saturday afternoon.

Some people are just horrendously entitled and feel that the way to get what they want is to shout at and belittle retail staff. It really is as simple as that. People who think that their situation is exceptional and that everything should work to their benefit. Pricks basically.

Also. I only hacked it for a year on the frontlines of a Morrisons store but the twelve years I’ve done in a call centre has taught me that a frightening proportion of the general public are happy to abuse customer service staff until they get what they want.

Always treat CS staff with respect.

My favourite when I worked in retail, were the customers who threatened to walk away without buying anything if I didn't bend over backwards to offer them freebies and extra discount, having presumably mistaken me for someone who actually gave a gooseberry fool about sales.

You're telling me you'll leave, and I don't have to offer you anything? Sounds like a win win to me!

I have a love/hate relationship with the customers at the library.

Love A lot of the people are genuinely nice and happy to chat. They can be super grateful for any help that you give whether it's finding a book or information

Hate The sense of entitlement some people have. Want to send a fax? (yes some people do) "I'm not paying for that, I pay my taxes, this should be free. My taxes pay your wages! (god I hate when they say that)

Customer: I need to print this from my phone
Me: I'm sorry, our printers aren't wireless. You can either plug the phone in to a computer and we can try it that way. Or if it's in your emails we can get you on a computer and print it that way.
Customer: I'm not a member of the library
Me: No worries, I can put you on the guest computers. I'm happy to help
Customer: I can't remember my log in for my email/ebay/travel site
Me: Well we can try a few things to log you in (none of them work because their phone numbers aren't up to date and they can't remember the answers to security questions)
Me: I'm sorry, I've done everything I can think of I'm not sure I can get you into your account
Customer: Well this is ridiculous, what am I supposed to do? <glares like I'm supposed to hack into their account>
Me: Maybe if someone helped you set it up you could talk to them and they'll be able to give you the log in?
Customer: That's no good, I'm on my way to the airport and need it now

I'm genuinely happy to help with problems that are caused by our computers. I'm happy to help with stuff that's not technically my job. I draw the line when I try to help and I just can't for whatever reason and you get pissy with me. I draw the line at buying something for you online using my own money and you paying me back. I will also not write a letter to your MP when I've seen you on computers and are perfectly capable of doing it yourself. Also, if you ask me to look for an organisation and that organisation doesn't exist, that is not my fault, shouting at me doesn't change the fact that it doesn't exist. And likewise, if you give me the wrong information on a book (title, series and author) and my searching turn nothing up because of your lack of information that isn't an excuse to yell. Also, if I show you the authors website and there is no mention of it on there, maybe take the authors word over your own wrong information

Please do not post this in the "No Context" thread
