What the strawberry float is wrong with people on ebay?

Case 1:
Person with over 200 rep buys thing, says they'll be able to pay in a few days. Ok, I don't mind waiting. Day comes, says not for a bit longer but 100% promise on date 2. I'm losing patience but have given them the benefit of the doubt. Date 3 comes and I call them out and they say it won't be for a few more days because of Covid and they barely have any money etc. At which point I quote all their promises back to them and say maybe they shouldn't be buying nerd gooseberry fool on the internet if their situation is that dire. Gets cancelled and relisted and never hear from them again.

Case 2:
Person buys thing, over 48hrs pass and nothing, I open a claim with ebay. They then pay with an 'echeque', i've never heard of this but apparently it's a thing but is extremely outmoded as it involves going through a bank and is apparently a known technique of trying to get people to dispatch something before it clears, which of course it never does. Thistakes a week to go through and bounces, during which they say they'll look into it etc. I tell them after it bounces to pay, hear nothing, that gets relisted too - all over a goddamn PS2 game for a fiver.

It takes 30 seconds to hit buy and then pay for something, why is that second step such a herculean task for some people? If they don't want it then just say so, I don't mind. Otherwise we go all through this gooseberry fool and they get a mark for not paying. I've got another one that has gone over 48hrs without paying so they'll get an invoice with a polite reminder to pay tonight and if there's nothing by when i finish work tomorrow we start the whole process for this one again. I used to be fairly generous but all this gooseberry fool has eroded my patience and I am sticking to the absolute letter of ebay's processes.

Ebay is full of banana split buyers.

When you bid / buy it should auto charge you on completion of yhr listing not require the person to actually go in and pay

You can block people from buying your stuff, which is now my default response after getting these shitshows resolved. Also if they get enough unpaid item cases they should get penalised.

There are banana split sellers too. I ordered some UV resin for a project back in April. They listed it saying it'll be June for it to arrive, I thought it was because of Covid and because it was from China, and paid through paypal straight away likening always do. The seller had a 96% rating if I remember correctly. Now I'm unable to contact them to get my money back after nothing was sent to me.

Raise it in the resolution centre, eBay will refund you and sort it.

If you a buyer eBay will bend over backwards to fix your issues, as a seller you get sod all.

I rarely list items for auction these days, rather Buy It Now with immediate payment enabled. Also changed the settings so people with a certain amount of unpaid cases against them and who don’t use PayPal can’t purchase.

This is kind of a problem with not being able to vet customers and give them wiggle room where there is no actual upfront payment at the same point (or representing the total commitment, to pay) when creating a contract.

So my payment terms are very clearly upfront or there's no order, there's no contract whatsoever and I don't deliver or start work on anything, ever until, the invoice is paid with 0 days credit.

This last week some builder wants two polo shirts, I give them a quote for £30, look up their competitor and it's strawberry floating £79 including set up costs, VAT and delivery etc. Invoice isn't going to get paid because they have been "let down", so I move the payment date by 7 days which cuts 5 work days out of my delivery timescale which I need to actually do the job. This isn't paid either because they've still been "let down waiting for a job", so I state the terms of my sale and ask for payment as soon as possible, I've already ordered the shirts that are getting printed on so I am money down. He finally pays via my online invoices with a debit card 2 days later, but wants them completed the followin day. Well that's the entire strawberry floating point of my having a lead time so I can complete the work. So not only have gotten an absolutely blinding deal they've got it done as a rush job at no extra charge (typically you charge 2-3 the amount for a next day delivery on these things, my standard rush fee is at least 25% extra) which I completed at about midnight.

When they came to collect they were talking about getting a "bundle", I asked "well what is going in the bundle" so, hoodies, crew neck shirts, sign writing, the lot. Well, they don't pay for gooseberry fool on time so I'm probably not going to follow up on that because the stress isn't worth it, these aren't big asks if you are already getting a cracking price.

Trust me this isn't unusual, and is just people being morons who don't respect anyone else's time. The only way around it is what I described, 100% payment upfront. If someone doesn't want to pay or can't pay then that's not your strawberry floating problem.

The answer is, "strawberry float you, pay me". Do 100% Buy It Now listings and forget about it. Just list slightly below the average selling price on completed listings and take the hit financially instead of strawberry floating around; ask yourself what is worth more, your time or your money, I'd bank on 99% of the time you'd prefer to have your life back.

I put most things on BIN, but somehow people still "buy" things and then don't pay for them, I need to check my settings, which in eBay is less than a simple process. I will also filter out people with unpaid records.

I can't really remember but I think when listing there might be a checkbox that says "require immediate payment", but I'm not 100% sure.

It might still require the person to manually pay... In that case, that's bollocks if the payment method required is paypal or debit card.

The single most annoying thing Ebay buyers do is trying to haggle on a BIN price.

Was selling a DS game for a fiver and some cheeky twat kept asking if I'd knock 20p off it, twenty strawberry floating pence!

Equally annoying is eBay turning on “Make An Offer” on listings after a few days after you’ve explicitly turned it off when you listed the item in the strawberry floating first place!

I dont mine them turning it on, what does strawberry float me off is people send an "offer" for under the starting price of an auction item.

That has its place though. For example there was an item I had on my watchlist for a while which was starting bid of £45 with a best offer on it. The auction ran with 0 bids at least 3 times so I sent an offer under it, and there was some back and forth but we couldn't agree on price as I thought his best offer of £40 was still too much.

On the flipside of this, buying things from people on facebook can be awful as well. I asked someone how much shipping would be from the US, I expected it to be so much as to not make the thing worth buying, but they just responded "IDK how much it would be."

Well strawberry floating look it up then! I can't magic up how big/heavy it is when packed, where you're shipping from and what companies you have available. I'm pretty misanthropic at the best of times but dealing with people when buying/selling things makes me want to go live in a cave and never see another human being again.

I’ve just set this up, do you use the default site lists or have some custom ones. Seems to be heaps of them you can use that I imagine would break a lot of stuff if you want over the top with them

Most lists are pretty well curated and will offer different options - from just blocking ads to offering more child friendly protection from porn etc. but yeah you will get the odd occasion where something breaks or kicks you out because of the blocker. It's usually easy to pause or customise the blocking depending on which mechanism you are using to get around these problems

Could you clarify if you are talking about pihole or ublock origin?
