"Hi"

Or

"Hi, could you let me know when xxx will be ready?"

Not exactly time consuming is it?

Oh I'm not saying they're right to do it, but I can see why they would.

Moggy wrote:People at work that send instant messages but don't get to the point straight away. So many just send:

"Hi"

Which then forces me to say "hi" and wait for them to type out the question they have.

It's a small thing, but drives me crazy.

I’m the other way around, I have a tendency to just send the question then send a “sorry, hi” after so it is less rude :D

If it’s a longer message I do remember and then add an Ello, at the start :D

I'm with Moggy on this. I'll often get a message notification pop up in the corner of my screen just saying hi, and if I'm in the middle of something, I'm not going to stop what I'm doing just to respond to that, I'll wait until the follow up message with an actual question in it comes through. If it doesn't, I'll probably wait a couple of minutes until I've finished what I was doing, then respond.

Our work laptops lock and show you as idle/away if you've been inactive for 5 minutes, so as long as someone is showing as available, they're probably there.

I just don’t like instant messaging in general. If it’s not urgent (and it hardly ever is) why not send me an e-mail? That way I’m not under pressure to duck out of whatever I’m doing, thus losing any momentum I’d built up on the task, to answer your banal query.

MS Teams seems to be quite aggressive with showing you as away too, it seems to only take a few mins and I can't find a way to disable it.

I've found this. I can be writing an actual note in my book and look up to see teams is showing me as away, which when you're working from home can come across in a bad way.

Install a configurable mouse jiggler app (or get a hardware one) - it basically keeps your mouse moving randomly when you are not using it to simulate activity on the computer.

Or just close Teams and never re-open it?

That's also a good solution, but maybe a bit too advanced to suggest as the first option ;)

Difficult when our company has recently moved to using it for nearly everything bar regular emails.

Oh I'm somehow not on the free dental coverage offered by work. Fantastic, great stuff.

Same, we're being migrated over from Skype to Teams for phone calls, before getting rid of Skype entirely, so now all meetings, calls, and a lot of file sharing, will all be through Teams.

Waiting for news of if something (that's already late) is going to be delivered is gooseberry fool. I really hope Yodel don't strawberry float me over again. It's literally 5 minutes down the road but I can't go and collect it without giving them 24 hours notice so it's better to wait for the delivery.

Sounds like it would be quite the quest.

That's really gooseberry fool, though. What is it you need doing? I'm fortunate enough that the most expensive work I've ever needed is a filling, so I've never really looked into cover, but feel like I probably should in case.

That's been running through my mind since yesterday!

Didn't even get a keg of beer.

I need a root canal done on a tooth that broke apart. Thought I was taking decent care of my teeth but managed to allow this molar to get some decay going. My own fault I know but I wasn't expecting that alone to cost over £650, without a likely equally expensive crown to seal it off properly.

I'm hoping I can get onto the work plan now in time for the treatment and that at least part of it can still be covered.
