Websites. So full of shite these days.

You navigate to a website and wait for about a week for it all to load. Instantly you're hit with a message about cookies, and of course if you want to opt-out you have to click off the page and manually untick several boxes or turn off toggles, whereas accepting everything is one click. And don't expect the site to remember your preferences, so be prepared to do this every time you visit the page. And then do the same on every other site you visit ever again.

When you actually start trying to use the site, you've barely moved the cursor before a pop-up asks you to complete a survey and rate your experience. Yes, I've been using the site for less than 10 seconds, I'm sure I can provide you with useful feedback on your site, its features, and your products. Click off that and find something you want to look at. Go to click on it, but an advert or other part of the page suddenly loads and the link moves, so you inadvertedly end up clicking on the advert. A new page opens and takes you to some shite you don't care about. Close that and go back to the page you were trying to browse. A chat window pops up with someone asking you if you need help. strawberry floating hell, how about you give me a chance first? Close the chat window. Scroll down the page, full of adverts, auto-playing videos, and new things loading all the time, so it's painfully slow. Close the page and wonder why you bothered, and why companies make their websites so horrible to use.

You just described bad websites.

But more seriously, all those toggles for non-essential (or even what the website considers to be "essential" cookies), should be toggled "off" by default. Otherwise it's against what's law at the moment.

There's various (very effective) design patterns to encourage people to opt into advertising cookies (we call these "dark patterns"), so it isn't made easy, but that's two seperate issues. Make that the bottom right button, in bold, and green, and hide the alternative behind some kind of tab or expandable area and all that gooseberry fool. Probably illegal too but the advertising bandits don't give a strawberry float about that. The legalisation is designed about the (correct) assumption that you don't want your activity across the Internet tracked by each and every website you finish (and generally aggregated en masse by a handful of corporations who know pretty much everything about you). But they still manage to find a way to flip the switch, so to speak (more often American websites that are ignoring the EU-US privacy shield. Or even worse, the ones that pretty much just say "you're in Europe, sorry, strawberry float you".

Re: Drumstick's comment, I have ABP and U-Block installed on my own PC, but can't on my work laptop. And plenty of people I know don't know about those kind of things, let alone something like pi-hole. And as you say, you shouldn't have to take these steps to get a functioning website.

GG, I think most websites I go onto assume you're okay with their tracking cookies, and then if you want to opt-out you have to toggle them all off. It would make it a lot easier and quicker if the default was 'don't track me', but it feels like it isn't.

I like the idea of an extension that eliminates this message, but does that just automatically accept them for you without showing the message? Or does it just block it from appearing without giving any consent either way?

Someone in the office is playing terrible music far too loud through their shitty headphones so all I can hear is this tinny "tsk tsk tsk" noise over and over.

I want to kill them.

Omg, works outside and literally entire house vibrating as some kind of Tarmac truck is parked right outside my house 4 feet away from my living room and there's a strawberry floating miniature steam roller filling the chasm they presumably cut out of the road over the past few days with one of those grinders. Hopefully that means they're done soon :dread:

I'm slightly annoyed with Gillian Anderson making me have unclean thoughts about Maggie Thatcher. My entire belief system is in danger of collapsing.

On the one hand she was unnecessarily cruel to the miners.

In the other hand is my penis.
