People that use abbreviations in threads that make no reference to what the abbreviation could be.

Oh yeah, I enjoy Zelda Breath of the Wild, but it's no IPTOCIW

i think rng is a really good phrase for something that encompasses all the randomness that can happen in games, and specifically speedruns
when people just start using it for 'bad luck' or 'something in this game i dont like' it is annoying though.

I thought it was an abbreviation for range.

Sometimes in RPGs and RTS you have that as a stat, surely it doesn't just mean luck?

Well, I may be imagining things, but there's similar abbreviations like STR, POW, HIT, DEF, DEX, LCK, MAG, INT, etc. maybe it's a Japanese thing, I have no idea. Nebulous strings of ALL CAPS are so much fun.

Edit: the only reference I can find on google is the Excel/VBA function, so either some game devs have been doing too many spreadsheets or I've crossed wires again :fp:

I think that's the Excel RAND / RND function (RaNDom number generator), Geck. I used it back in my BASIC coding days.... something like:

10 REM *** RND Demo for Gecko ***
20 N=INT(RND(1)*(11-1)+1)
30 IF N<5 THEN PRINT"Gecko is having pizza for breakfast"
40 IF N=>5 THEN PRINT"Gecko is having porridge for breakfast"
50 END

In this example, a random (integer) number between 1 and 10 is created and assigned to N. If that number is in the range 1 to 4 than you get pizza for breakfast; if it is 5 to 10 then you get porridge for breakfast. In "RNG" terms I believe that the drop rate for pizza is 40% and the drop rate for porridge is 60%.

So... err, there you go :-) .

Abbreviations have always bugged me a little. People write out full sentences perfectly fine, but then when it comes to the name of something that's also maybe only three or four words they suddenly haven't got the enthusiasm to write it all out?

I get abbreviating something if you've already mentioned it in whatever you've posted, but just jumping straight in with abbreviations (especially when so many games have the same abbreviations) is the worst (IMHO).

Took me so long to realise what smh meant, too :fp:

Apparently setting up a new email address puts me on a 5 week waiting list. 5 weeks.

A week later and I've had 4 email updates on this, the latest one telling me it's been assigned to someone. In the time it took to assign someone they could have just set a NEW EMAIL ADDRESS UP strawberry float me.

Still no email address.
