Fare dodgers on the train. For the second time this month I saw someone sneak in behind another person at the gate so they could get out without paying. And because smaller stations don’t tend to have guards on both sides of the platform (if at all) there’s nothing you can do. Infuriating.

When I was working in London and getting the tube back from work a bunch of kids were clearly trying to fare dodge. As I went through with my oyster card one of them was literally pressing right up against my backpack, seemingly thinking I wouldn't notice.
Fortunately a guard caught the little shitrag right away and pulled him away.

That reminds me of back when people would send away their camera films in the mail for developing, i did it once and got someone's pics from a cross channel ferry instead.

i really dont find this so bad - if someone is poor enough to do it then fair play to them as travel is expensive.
if theyre just doing it because theyre cheap then strawberry float them.

So if you're poor it's ok to avoid paying for travel like everyone else? Got it.

if youre living hand to mouth then fare-dodging is less bad, i didnt say it was a good thing, but i can understand it.

I don't know if it's strictly speaking 'OK', but it highlights a problem with the cost of public transport. If you're very poor it should be free for you during the day on weekdays IMO.

Paying to earn the minimum wage does represent a rather large economic defecit for the poor I must say.

People moan about paying for yearly season tickets, they're ususually on at least 16k to considerably more and have access to season ticket loans or an overdraft. If you have irregular hours and low wages you're looking at taking home hourly amounts around £5 and only on some days, so you have to stretch that as much as 7x over the course of a week if you have no other work, and if you do, it's often the same. That's how far afield some people have to go. It is not fun. A smart person ignoring the benefits stigma will claim tax credits but get a pitiful amount based on the low hours, meaning this is effectively just state subsidy of low wages that the employer can probably afford to pay but chooses not to. Which is why the min wage has to increase significantly.

There's little worse than the feeling 30-50% of your work is spent paying to be at work, in real terms what you are earning for your self while still delivering exceptional value for the employer if you are good is incredibly depressing. You are literally paying to exist to work. The individual economic argument for staying at home and claiming benefits is actually better, and that's a big reason why so many more people are freelancing and working from home to move out of that trap, and the government is attacking this as well as apparently those people don't pay enough taxes (they do, the government just wants more NI from traditional PAYE employments and more private pensions to reduce state pension reliance).

I’d agree that fare dodging is wrong. But it’s beyond me why anybody gives a gooseberry fool if somebody else does it.

Actually his balls are so big that they get caught in the barriers which then forces him to have to pay.

I rarely have to use public transport (thank goodness, can't be getting too close to the great unwashed :dread: ) but I'd imagine it's a sense of "I pay all this money and some git gets it for free" and a sense of a general lack of respect of the social constructs and norms that modern society has established.

Surely it's a basic sense of fairness? There are plenty of things that people justifiably get annoyed about because of a lack of fairness.
