I'm not sure that's true, I think Gen Z have it even worse than Millenials

They really don't. There's studies into this that shows average wealth of Gen Z and Millenials. A lot of millenials came of age in the middle of the 2008 financial crisis and we're one of the only generations who have gone through two major financial crisis while we're still trying to get our life sorted. Job security for millenials is a lot worse than for Gen Z as well and overall it appears that Gen Z wages are higher than Millenial wages were at the same stage of our lives.

Source for that?

You're also only looking at it through the viewpoint of wealth, there's a lot of other factors. The rise of social media has had a huge impact on the mental health of young people growing up.

Who the strawberry float are Gen Z - I'm guessing the one after Millenials? Surely a lot of them are still too young to really assess how strawberry floated they have been by recent circumstances?

Yep. Zoomers has caught on for Gen Z too.

Mid to late 90s is generally seen as the start and up to early 10s.

I'd struggle believe claims about zoomers doing better than us millennials, particularly here in the UK. Think about it - they were raised under austerity and have been becoming adults during Brexit and during Covid. On top of an economic contraction there has been an expansion of "zero hours contracts" and the "gig economy" - so a decrease in stability and labour rights - for entry-level workers since we entered the workforce too.

That's not to say our socioeconomic experience hasn't been horrific as well. I think what's definitely clear is that we have both been absolutely shat on as generational cohorts and should have solidarity with each other.

Social media was obviously a thing for millennial adolescence but it simply wasn't the absurd, all-encompassing behemoth it is today.

Going through teenage/early adult years with social media developed to the level of awfulness it has been at since around 2016ish must be horrific. :dread:

Gen Z is also the cohort I would say has lost the most value in terms of life experience due to the pandemic.

I'm generally terrified of helping my child navigate social media when he is older :dread:

I would love it to collapse before then, as unlikely as that it is.

Tom from Myspace is a good dude. Created a fun site, let people customize it and have fun, sold up when he got the chance and now enjoys life travelling the world taking photographs.

At no point did he try harvesting personal information to sell to the world and facilitate the spread of dangerous propaganda.

That's a good one. The buzz of a new N64 Magazine being on the shelves was unreal.

The internet killed it :x

I am genuinely interested in trying to kickstart an oral history project on the lifecycle of Super Play through to NGamer. All of the staff, interviewed for hours, along with readers of the magazine and future publishing etc. There's loads in there to talk about as well, from the magazines themselves to the culture around them, the part it played in the creation of online communities and its continuing legacy as an important part of British games journalism. Etc etc yadda yadda yadda.

Sorry I can't find a source for what I was saying, but Covid has definitely made it worse as well for both us and Gen Z. I saw this on resetera so maybe this was more an American thing but basically it appears that things were looking better for GenZ overall.

Millenials still haven't really recovered from the initial financial crisis we dealt with either so we're completely strawberry floated. Basically everyone after Gen X is pretty strawberry floated.

My serious answer to this - we probably can't avoid losing touch with what the youths(!) are up to, but we can choose not to become grumpy boomers who insist "no, it's the children who are wrong!".

All you've gotta do to not lose touch is spend all your waking time on the internet like I do, then you'll never lose track of what's going on. Also never forget that all the issues today are caused by boomers, not people younger than us. They're doing better than we were at that stage of their lives and Millenials overall have been strawberry floated the most, but it's all because of boomers.

I really don't see the point in this generational blaming. As shown here, cohesion amongst these groups is non-existent: https://www.bbh-labs.com/puncturing-the ... ional-myth

Yes, older people are richer but in 30/40 years time that will still be the case - it will just be our generation who are the richest, and the youth will be calling us selfish pricks.

The financial crisis hit millennials but austerity, Brexit and Covid are all likely to hit Gen Z harder. Austerity strawberry floated their education and Brexit and covid will strawberry float their early employment years harder than the financial crash hit millennials.

It's the generation after Z (whatever the strawberry float that'll be called) that I feel most sorry for. They'll still have the fallout of all of the above to deal with, plus climate change is likely to smash into them in a way none of us had to deal with.

It's all cyclical. And a lot of manufactured shite. "Oh, the Gen Zs! The Millennials! The Xers and the Boomers!" Arbitrary nonsense designed to set people off against one another and create artificial divides.

Having said that, strawberry float anyone who wasn't born within seven years of 1989. :shifty:

Of course there are underlying economic processes that help drive the observed differences between generational cohorts - and all culture is reflective of the economic foundations of society - but when age is one of the strongest predictors of someone's political opinions I don't see how to avoid discussing differences between how younger and older people see the world as a part of how we talk about politics.
