Are Saturday morning kids shows even a thing anymore? I thought it was just cooking shows or sports shite on Saturday mornings now rather than stuff like SM:TV.

It's clearly not very good. If it was, they would be giving it a proper time slot even though it's a kids' show.

Yeah, this should have easily been good enough for prime time just like Thunderbirds was when it went out on BBC2 in the 90s.

By all accounts and reviews it IS good. I was fairly sceptical at first but having seen more and more I'm quite hopeful. The model work does look lovely, and to be fair it would be a lot cheaper and quicker to just go totally CG.

Do ITV just have a total lack of faith and aversion to stick it out there every week? It seems odd, given the huge fanfare and publicity this week... but given how they tend to treat these types of shows is it really a surprise (anyone who followed New Captain Scarlet will know what I mean).

I was also hoping for a proper blu ray release of the original series to tie in with this (as opposed to the cropped widescreen one they stuck out a few years ago) but no such luck. It looks the US is getting a proper release this year, but reports so far indicate its not region free. Watching my DVDs yesterday after having watched some remastered HD episodes on the Supermarionation boxset its incredible how good it looks on blu ray.

If you liked the Hollywood movie you'll probably think this is amazing.

The models are really good, the models in the scene with the [is]dish coming down the mountain[/is] were fantastic, but strawberry floating hell the CG characters really stood out from it and it looked absolutely terrible.

Was Brains Indian or just a tanned Welshman? strawberry floating hell that was awful. Made worse by the fact I've worked with one of the writers

After the amount of hype and build up this got that is a really poor viewing figure.

They should just leave the franchise alone.

I'm not sure that's true. The original series was about thirty years old when it had its nineties resurgence, but it was a huge hit with kids at the time, including myself, who had no nostalgia to draw upon. There's no reason the new series couldn't take off in the same way if it was handled right, which it obviously hasn't been.

I thought the episode did a lot right, actually. All the model stuff was great, and the characters at least looked better in motion than they did in stills. It tried to cram far too much in though in an attempt to showcase all the Thunderbirds in action, and combined with all the DRAMATIC MUSIC it got a bit overbearing as it went on. Hopefully it will calm down for the regular episodes, but we'll see.

I remember the first episode of the original was the Firefly one, which was basically just a regular episode that spent a well paced hour rescuing a single plane. Instead, this episode had the team stabilising a satellite, rescuing the crew of an undersea lab, saving a city and outsmarting the Hood. It seems to be following the "kids have no attention span" school of thinking, which is bollocks.

I did enjoy it for the most part though, "Indian" Brains aside, and I'm glad that Kayo got herself a Thunderbird after all. I'll probably watch the rest for the hell of it, but based on those viewing figures I can't see it getting a second season.

Yeah, I pretty much agree with Mogster. The models are amazing (anyone else notice the seabase was pretty much the Eagle Transporter with legs?), but it was a bit too busy and the writing is pretty shonky.

Hopefully the rest of the series will try and pace itself a little better. I watched a few of the older episodes in the run-up to this, and the "action" scenes really haven't aged that well. Still not sure the CGI characters are much better than the nightmare-inducing puppets, though.

Yes, I agree with Mogster too.

To be honest, I thought it was pretty good and I rather enjoyed it. The visual was very impressive and very colourful. I could tell some of set pieces were real model rather than the CGI, but the overall was great though. I also felt the pace was little too quicker for my liking and perhaps I got used to the original's pace too much.

I look forward to the next episode and it will be a half an hour instead of an hour this time so it may be better to focus one rescue at once time.

Just been watching an episode of this - it's just not as good as the original series is it? The CGI looked ropey as well, my mrs thought I was watching a really long Mr. Muscle advert

It does one thing well though - I now really want to watch some of the old stuff

I've stuck with it, and I've rather enjoyed it so far. Today's was probably the weakest of the lot so far, but last week's was really quite good. It's the people that let the CGI down, although you get used to them, as the rest of the show often looks really good. The model stuff is always a highlight.

I've been watching a few of the original episodes recently and they're still much better, and I highly doubt people will be watching the new series fifty years down the line, but they're still decent enough in their own right.
