Toblerone faces mountain of criticism over 'stupid' change to its chocolate chunks

The makers of Toblerone face a mountain of fury after making a controversial change to its distinctive triangular chocolate chunks.

Mondelez International has increased the gap between the peaks as a UK-only cost-saving measure to reduce the weight of its bars.

The company, which also owns Cadbury, said the move was down to the rise in the cost of ingredients, and denied it was a result of Brexit.

But some consumers have described the move as "the wrong decision" and said the bigger spaces looked "stupid".

In a statement on the Toblerone Facebook page, the company said: "We had to make a decision between changing the shape of the bar, and raising the price.

"We chose to change the shape to keep the product affordable for our customers, and it enables us to keep offering a great value product. it had to make a decision between changing the look of the bars or raising their price."

The move has resulted in the weight of the 400g bars being reduced to 360g and the 170g bars to 150g, while the size of the packaging has remained the same.

Other food manufacturers have previously announced rises in their product prices, blaming the falling value of the pound following the UK's decision to leave the EU.

A spokeswoman for Mondelez acknowledged that the foreign exchange rate was currently "not favourable", but added: "This change wasn't done as a result of Brexit."

Mondelez has faced a wave of criticism for "messing" with much-loved Cadbury's products.

Consumers have complained about Daily Milk bars being given rounded edges, bars shrinking, the axing of Cadbury chocolate coins, Bournville chocolate disappearing from the Heroes tub, sultanas in Fruit & Nut bars and axing the company's traditional Christmas chocolate gift to pensioners.

Perhaps the biggest controversy surrounded the 2015 decision to replace Dairy Milk in its recipe for Cadbury's Creme Eggs with cheaper chocolate.

Silly iriots! Why didn't they just make the whole bar smaller? That just looks plain ridiculous.

Add a bit to the price, I wouldn't mind paying a bit more.

I always find this kind of thing amusing, along with the excuses. Manufacturers are so fast to pass on increased costs, don't they realise that consumers don't actually have any extra money (and I know in this example they are reducing the quantity, but it is effectively increasing the price). Here is an idea, don't increase costs (or reduce rations), absorb the costs yourself (giving up some of your massive profits) and keep consumers (who give you a business) happy.

They do forget that without the consumer there is no business and just focus on keeping the share holders happy.

Read about this earlier and didn't believe the triangles being spaced out could possibly look stupid. I was wrong.

Toblerone is already a more expensive chocokate, seems weird they were so sensitive to a price increase

Toblerone was a premium brand...until they lowered the price so much it can now be found in discounters up and down the land, including the bleedin' pound shop.

What everyone should be buying however is this:

It's always been better. ALWAYS.

Hardly a surprise. Snickers, Mars... the size of every chocolate bar has shrunk by over 1/4 of what used to be the standard size over the last few years. Has anyone had a Snickers recently?

I don't like nuts (and hence Snickers) but I've noticed Mars and Twix have got smaller. What started as potentially a good thing (people eating smaller portions) will probably end with greedy sods now eating 2 as 1 is not enough.

Probably. Chocolate prices have been rising for a while and will continue to do so. There is supposed to be a production shortage, pretty sure I read a story a year or two ago about the worry of a potential chocolate shortage and that seems to be hitting home. There is a similar concern at the minute with coffee.

Nothing to do with Brexit of course, as some childish muppets would try to insinuate. Though our increasing prices over here due to the falling value of the £ will exacerbate matters.
