Have to say, despite my longstanding love for the Olympics I'm a bit apprehensive about how things are going to go down in Tokyo. Hoping that things don't get out of hand and we don't look back on this as a monument to stupidity.

EDIT: Don't worry, the official website has a pretty good one, simply hover over the medal images and it tells you what events are being decided on that day

Also, this women’s football round Robin has been strawberry floating howling so far. Japan vs Canada, Canada look alright but Japan can’t string passes together.

The Team GB site is pretty dreadful i.e. that shows a list of all Athletes ever...
Have any of the papers done a day by day guide with our Athletes yet?

It's really sad these games will be tarnished by COVID. I can only imagine Japan would have put on a hell of a show in normal times. Now it feels a bit, let's just get it out the way. Feel bad for everyone involved, the athletes, the organisers and those in country who don't want it to go ahead.
Still, love me some Olympic competition so really looking forward to catching as much of it as I can

I love the Olympics, but there's been little fanfare compared to usual because of COVID, and it all feels a bit tarnished what with no fans, some athletes already pulling out (and likely more to come), etc. It's a real shame, as it already feels like a bit of an anti-climax and it hasn't even started yet.
The time difference will be the main barrier for me watching this I think, so I'll have to make do with highlights, which isn't great. I'll probably watch the opening ceremony for once though, seeing as it's Japan doing it

I think it'[s just some preliminary rounds, with the games starting properly on Friday.

Whilst I don't live in Tokyo, interest here feels really flat. It doesn't feel like it all kicks off tomorrow. I came to Japan just after they announced Tokyo had the games, and there was build up and excitement even back then.
In some ways, I do feel sorry for them, as I know how the run up to the games feels and how much a successful one can invigorate the country, like London 2012 did.
On the other hand, I think the government have strawberry floated up quite a few times with COVID. Ineffectual "State of Emergencies" getting called that don't really do anything except shut bars and restaurants at 9pm. People believing that just masking up but not changing any other habits is sufficient. People still flocking en masse to places on days off or when the weather is nice. Still holding events because it's just "what is always done" rather than thinking logically. Taking the foot off the gas whenever cases drop, and then having "4th and 5th waves".
Now such stupidity is in no way limited to Japan, and the UK has had its own brand of idiocy added to those as well, with the lack of masks.
And some of it is the IOC too, who seem to want the games to go ahead despite anything, presumably for corporate reasons. Even if the Japanese government wanted to cancel the games, they probably couldn't.
It might all kick off tomorrow, once media attention switches to broadcasting the games rather than the Corona issues surrounding it, but there's not much sense of anticipation.

Things are going pretty good.The show director of the Olympics opening ceremony has been dismissed, one day before the event is due to be held.
Footage of Kentaro Kobayashi from the 1990s recently emerged in which he seems to be making jokes about the Holocaust.
Japan's Olympic chief Seiko Hashimoto said the video ridiculed "painful facts of history".
The dismissal is the latest in a string of scandals to hit the Games.
It comes days after a composer quit the team creating the ceremony after it emerged he had bullied classmates with disabilities at school.
In March, creative chief Hiroshi Sasaki quit after suggesting that plus-size comedian Naomi Watanabe could appear as an "Olympig". He later apologised.
And in February, Yoshiro Mori was forced to step down as the head of the organising committee after he made remarks about women that were criticised as "inappropriate".
Mr Mori was quoted as saying women talked too much and that meetings with many female board directors would "take a lot of time"
