It may end up making the game more interesting, but I hate it when they bolt these 'RPG-lite levelling up' systems onto games where it really doesn't make sense...it's funny how the designer mentions you can 'go wherever you want', when I bet in reality you can still only go where the game lets you, until you upgrade your jump and climbing ability sufficiently, at which point the new routes are effectively the next level in a linear progression anyway.

Good to see the franchise adapt. New Lara looks hot too. Look forward to see how it develops.

It's cocktail time!. Then again when isn't it.

I wish this stupid fad of naming a series' newest installment after the original would wear the strawberry float off.

This times a million.

I love finding new items, that stuff is ace, but levelling systems are a real chore in many games where I just want a pure experience. I love these kind of exploration games when the lead comes with all the abilities I need out the box and the game is designed around a core set up. I don't want to be putting three points in my guns so I can do more damage, it's trivial and in many respects rather tacky.

Purity is the better way to go for a more immersive experience.

I like the sound of this game, really I do, I just wish in many ways that it was a new IP to give a fresh angle to a fresh idea rather than lumping a whole wagon of preconceptions onto its shoulders with a franchise name.

Garth Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen wrote:
- Lara is 21 in this game
- It's not only a reboot of the franchise but a reboot of the entire brand. As a result there will be no "real" Lara model this time.
- They're doing performance capturing with this game
- There are brutal deaths in the game this time. One is described as a deranged man stabbing Lara in the chest and then closing her eyes after she's dead. Another includes a boulder falling on her leg to trap her before another falls and crushes her head.
- CD won't talk specifics on weapons but concept art shows a bow, shotgun and pistol
- The lock on targeting system is gone and it now has a free aim system. CD says that it can compete with any of their competitors.
- "I think that the major difference between this game and the old is the concept of smoke and mirrors," begins Darrell Gallagher, the studio head at Crystal Dynamics. "There was an illusion of freedom because of streaming and loading that would pop you out in a different location, but this is absolutely real. You can literally go any direction that you see and carve your own way to the finish line instead of being guided."
- "It was important in the game to not only deliver the character arc of Lara Croft emotionally, but to deliver it in gameplay as well so the player gets to grow into a hardened survivor," says experienced director Noah Hughes. As the game unfolds, Lara will scavenge new tools and gear that augment her abilities. Lara's athletic prowess will also evolve. Some areas begin inaccessible due to physical limitations or scarce supplies. With the right skills and gear, however, the island is Lara's for the taking.
- There are base camps in the game. Here you can combine items to create something new and access a skill system to upgrade Lara's abilities. You'll also be able to use base camps to fast travel to different locations to minimize backtracking.
- You'll need to gather food and water in order to survive
- There are humans in the game, including some of the crew members from the shipwreck off the coast of the island.

That's about it. It seems like CD is still be fairly secretive about the gameplay details. There are some nice in-game screenshots. One features Lara hanging upside down in what looks to be a cocoon. Also several screenshots showing her bloodied and with bandages on.

Mmm sweet exploration!

Screw that. I hope this Tomb Raider bombs so Crystal Dynamics can make a new Legacy of Kain game. Soul Reaver was the finest action/adventure on the PS1, better than any of the TR games.

I'm not convinced personally, seems that instead of putting time and effort into polishing what they were already pretty good at, CD decided to do another reboot. Two reboots in five years? Ouch.

The problem is the plot, which got ridiculously convoluted by the end of Defiance. I hate to say it but if any franchise deserved a remake it would be that. A proper 3D version of Blood Omen followed by a proper Soul Reaver that combined 1 and 2 into the game it was supposed to be. BO2 and Defiance weren't needed. The 'Raziel has always been the Soul Reaver' twist at the end of SR2 was a satisfactory ending.

- The lock on targeting system is gone and it now has a free aim system. CD says that it can compete with any of their competitors.

:fp: Enemies in TR should be few and far between. The reason Natla's Mines was the best level in the original was because there were only 4 bad guys to kill. The rest of the level was pure adventure and puzzle. This is how TR *should* be. Stealth should be encouraged as much as possible with animals only needing to be killed for food, not randomly attacking Lara. Human enemies should be kept to a bare minimum.

Would that ever actually happen though? Tomb Raider's a cultural phenomenon, it'd be a proper shame if the public could completely forget about the series - because that'd be a hell of an accomplishment.

It got mighty ridiculous for Need for Speed when its Hot Pursuit subseries went in release order like this:

  • Need for Speed III: Hot Pursuit
  • Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit II
  • Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit

Yes, the numbering went backwards. Does that make even the tiniest of sense to all of ye?

Lara's new look is definitely a rip off of Nathan Drake.

Dirty Lara.

Sounds interesting. Could be the first Tomb Raider I've ever bothered with if they...

Actually screw that. More Soul Reaver please! :D
