Part One of GT's Tomb Raider retrosprctive is up now.

http://www.gametrailers.com/full-episod ... --part-one

Brings back lots of memories - mainly of awful controls - but I remember the first Tomb Raider being one of the first games I bought for the PlayStation. Good times.

I'll post the other episodes as and when they appear.

Posted this in the retro thread.

Started Tomb Raider III the other day and am enjoying it, even though it can be infuriating at times. However, last night I decided to go back and start with TR 1 and TR 2 before continuing with TR3.

The controls aren't as bad as people might remember and quite quickly you get in tune with them, however the camera can be a bitch, but not all the time.

TR1 is such a huge game, or at least gives the impression of being so. Playing through it again I'm amazed at how many cool elements they ripped out of TR Anniversary, in fact there are whole chunks of levels missing!

Anyway, still a great game after all these years. Fantastic atmosphere as well.

I've almost finished TR1 and I've enjoyed every moment of it. Will begin TR2 in the week.

I remember everyone getting excited by the fact that in TR2, Lara's ponytail now moved about, her boobs were no longer "pointy" and that she donned a wetsuit at one point in the game.

Ahh, simpler times.

I remember the days of the sequels coming out really fast. Less than a year to make Tomb Raider II, and while it was 'more of the same', it was pretty much what everybody I knew wanted in the sequel at the time. I never played Tomb Raider III, or any of the others in the series, up until Anniversary and Underworld.

People complain so much these days about yearly sequels for series' such as CoD and Assasins Creed but that just goes to show how long its been going on.

I found that much as with those series' I soon got tired of playing thereabouts the same game every year. Didn't play a Tomb Raider game properly after TR3 until Legend came out, bought the whole collection in the Steam sale in January though but I'm not convinced over how well they've aged. Got to give Angel of Darkness a go though after all the criticism that got when it came out!

Some of my main memories are of the frustrating controls but they were a lot of the fun overall and at the time the original Tomb Raider felt so fresh and unlike anything else on the market. Sadly not an experience we get that often these days. That mid 90's era of Tomb Raider, Quake, Tomb Raider, Mario 64 etc. was a magnificent time to be a gamer.

Sega Saturn exclusive 8-)

Many people don't recognize that Lara first appeared on the Sega Saturn, i remember my friend being annoyed when Tomb Raider 2 became a PSX exclusive.

You say that but there were significant improvements between TR 1, 2 & 3 whereas the same cannot be said of Assassins Creed and COD.

I'm tempted to play through the originals on PC, I did try replaying the original on Sega Saturn and while it is workable the constant frame rate dips and dodgy camera control on that version started giving me headaches. TR 2 however was one of the first PS1 games I ever owned, I played that to death. Quite tough games too considering their popularity.

No one had really heard of Tomb Raider when I first started playing it. The reviews were good but it was a brand new game with a brand new character, a female lead for a game - it was all pretty much unheard of.

A few people who were curious came over to my place to play Tomb Raider and were blown away by it. Of course we were playing the Sega Saturn version that came out a good 3-4 months before the PlayStation version. Then the PlayStation version hit the scene and the world went absolutely nuts for Lara Croft.

Of course the PlayStation version looked many times better than the jaggy graphical horror show of the Saturn version, so that was the moment that it really dawned on me and a lot of other people that the Saturn was buried alive by the might of the PlayStation.

Well after literally two hours of faffing about I've finally got Tomb Raider 1 running well on my PC in HD, complete with the full set of CD music and PS1 quality cutscenes. It even just about plays well using the 360 pad thanks to Joy2Key.

Anyway, while the combat is still awful and the controls are as clunky as ever, I'm really enjoying myself. I played most of the early TR games on the PS1, but I've only ever played the original on the Saturn before. Let's just say there's quite a difference this time around!

First game was always the best. I found TR2 really disappointing despite all the reviews i'd read gushing over it.
