I've been recommended this band so please tell me a good album to start with. Something with catchy songs that will make me more interested in listening to the more obscure stuff.

If you're looking for catchy songs I don't think Tool are the band for you.

Yeah I would agree.

Their best album is Lateralus.

Lateralus is meant to be their best one.

I have never been able to get into them tbh.

What sort of spanner makes a tool thread?

Responses like this certainly throw a monkey wrench into OP's plans.

Personally I feel Aenima is their best album. So many great tracks on that.

First heard Tool when Sober and Prison Sex were played from their first album Undertow on Kerrang late night TV with Phil Alexander years ago. Not a massive Tool fan although I do own 4 of their albums, but Aenima is great. Never tire of hearing that

You could also try listening to A Perfect Circle who are fronted by Tool’s frontman Maynard James Keenan. Their Mer de Noms album is softer than Tool and may have the catchier tunes you’re looking for?

Prison Sex:

Sober:

Forty Six and Two (from Aenima):

Hooker with a penis (live) (from Aenima):

Stinkfist (from Aenima):

Eulogy (from Aenima):

strawberry float it, just listen to the whole Aenima album.

On a side note, aren’t Tool videos awesome on the whole?

Judith (A perfect circle) from Mer de Noms:

Magdalena (APC) from Mer de Noms:

I know what I’ll be listening to now! Cheers!

I dunno....

I'd say if you want "catchy" then start of with their debut album Undertow as its a bit closer to a more standard grunge/metal thing. But they only really started to find their voice on Aenima (which is bloody great) when the more prog elements come in. Then Lateralus happens where all the elements gel for a full album and its stunning. 10,000 Days is just as good really but its hard to look past Lateralus as their masterpiece. Its worth it for Danny Careys drumming alone.

As KingK says though if someone reckons you'd like Tool but your after catchy stuff then try A Perfect Circle. Their latest album (Eat the Elephant) is superb. Really hypnotic melodies and as is typical for Maynard some fantastic lyrics. This being possibly my fav set of words put to music for I don't know how long-

Its how my sis got into Tool actually (well Guitar Hero helped to).

I think a list is in order.

In order of personal preference:

1. Lateralus
2. Aenema
3. 10,000 Days
4. Undertow

number 2 and 3 are interchangeable depending on my mood though.

This is one of my favourite Tool songs

I agree with KingK. As a starting point, get hooked by the videos for Prison Sex and Sober. Then the whole of Aenima. And try A Perfect Circle, Mer de Noms.

Id say if you want more catchy Tool, try the singers other band A Perfect circle first.

I've got a perfect circle album,Magdalene being a highlight. I'll check out some of those songs, sounds like they might be growers. I can't stop listening to the band Failure at the moment. The nurse who loved me is their song.
