The surrounding suburbs are in a terrible state with the majority of people living in poverty and petty crime is common. Unemployment is a massive problem as there simply aren't any jobs and those that exist are highly seasonal.

It's a terrible place, really. Such a shame.

I think the new promenade has been a great project and is very visible rejuvenation. As you say the town centre is a bit dire with almost anything of note moving into Houndshill. It's definitely economically depressed and surviving off seasonal work, but walk along the front in the tourist areas and it's still Blackpool.

My Granny lives in South Shore and it's a nice enough area, with big houses down wide, tree-verged streets. My uncle lives up near Stanley Park and it's another very nice area. I always enjoy visiting.

I was going to add that the prom adds a lovely veneer to the whole area, and plasters over the poverty stricken areas fairly well. It is indeed lovely, as are some parts such as the areas you mentioned (Stanley Park  ). The problem is there's a rot behind all that.

This is a fascinating article on Blackpool's economic trends and includes the wonderfully named "gooseberry fool Life Syndrome." One huge takeaway is that disillusioned/disenfranchised folks are moving to Blackpool in droves as they associate the area with happier times. This is leading to a huge demand for jobs that simply don't exist and has spun the town into an economic death spiral.

Sounds like Birmingham, the city centre there has been heavily redeveloped in recent years.

I'm surprised Birmingham isn't on the list. Town may be getting redeveloped but go near the coach station and everything is run down. There's only a couple of places that look decent away from town but they're few and far between.

And yet all these outposts of Northern shiteness are still beaten to number 1 by Peterborough.

Things have gotten so bad for the North that you can't even rely on it to be the best at being shite now!

We tend to go Blackpool for a weekend every few years, they've done a great job of regenerating the front , especially around the South Pier and there's now some lovely looking colourful homes next to Bloomfield Stadium.

The rest of it though :dread:

It’s interesting how the Wigan Pier narrative of the shabby, poor, industrial north from the depression era is still going strong, almost ninety years later. It’s as if the smaller towns and cities in the area have never had any investment or opportunity since deindustrialisation and people are wondering why they’re festering away...

This was an interesting article. My uncle is a GP in Blackpool and the way surgeries are funded really doesn't help. They get paid per registered patient, which is essentially their funding, so it's advantageous to have young and healthy people registered at your surgery as you get the same money as someone who has to visit a lot and therefore costs a lot more to support.

A lot of young and healthy tech-savvy people are now registering with surgeries in other parts of the country (primarily London) that offer app-base consultancy, where you video chat with a GP, because it's a lot more convenient.

That leaves the local surgeries with the older and sicker population, so they are overstretched and underfunded.

Vice did a documentary on Blackpool: The Las Vegas of the North a few years ago. Got the full Roy Chubby Brown experience...

Another Northern linguistic idiosyncrasy up there with "know what ah mean" and " ah tell yer".

I'm more bothered about their insistence of in inserting "R"s that don't belong in words like "graRss" while completely omitted the "R" at the end of words ("buvvah" instead of brotheR).

You'd think a steady diet of American TV over the last couple of decades would've highlighted these issues to them, but alas.
