I had to wikipedia this... :fp: :(

Anyway, shouldn't this be "An Ellipsis"?

Nope. It should be "an ellipsis".

It's pretty obvious this has just turned into a popularity contest now, regardless of which category it is.

Surprised at all the low scores I seem to be getting for Grammar/Literacy :? I'm an English student!

Maybe it's just because I'm not as recognised as others, but I'm definitely as literate as them.

Yes I was an English Student too studying Engineering. Just because of your race, doesn't mean you should get higher marks :fp:

It took me ages to get it, but once I did

I've already given my humour ratings though, sadly.

Going to give some thought to literacy now. I should probably be getting higher scores in that category, considering I abhor text-speak, rarely make spelling errors, and use words like abhor.

There is a difference between being grammatically astute and being absolutely fastidious.

Take IGM's post, just above this one:

Generally your grammar seems top notch, but Eighthours, Hero of Canton and I (I'm sure there are others) would put a full stop before the emoticon, just because it's proper.

That's absolutely outrageous. 54?! My grammar and literacy levels are on a par with the very best. Take a look through my post history. You won't find a single typo. Behind my evidently extremely recognisable avatar resides a mature and cultured lesson in the written word. A verbal tour de force. A soaring bastion of the English language. And 25 for JV?

No, no, no. If anything was to be placed before the emoticon it would have been something like a dash or a colon, as it is part of the same sentence. This would have been followed by a full stop. However, I find punctuation after emoticons to look a little ungainly and out of place unless I am continuing to talk (type) immediately after it. I, basically, said (wrote) "It took me ages to get it, but once I did I laughed out loud." so the only thing missing is the unnecessary full stop.

That's my story and I am sticking to it.

You started at 50 like everyone else...then I reviewed you comments yesterday.

Mocky lost points for presuming it was a singular strawberry float, when it wasn't at all clear from what you meant.

(And Mardy isn't in the dictionary :P)

The reason I said 'proper' instead of 'correct' is because, even though you raise a valid point, I can't lose the full stop completely and putting it after the emoticon looks ridiculous. I must have it there, though! I would feel dirty without it.
