I booked my flight for this December, we'll be there for 35 days.

My air tickets ended up being $1300 for me and the wife each, pretty expensive but it's worth it as 1) I don't have to go through the US, and 2) They are direct.

Now I just need to find something I actually want to see that I haven't before. :toot:

Where have you been before? Been to all four of the main islands yet?

I'm going to presume you've been to Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. Maybe Hiroshima.

What about Nara? Or Koyasan in Wakayama? Or Nikko? Or Akita? Or Nagasaki?

Yes to the first 4, I've also been to Nara, Wakayama and a bunch of places in Hokkaido as well. This time we're going because the wife wants to spend the holidays with her family. We probably won't be able to do a lot of trips outside of Osaka as we have a baby who will be just over 1 year old when we travel. We're spending the first 2 or 3 days in Tokyo as she has some relatives there, so again it will be pretty tough to get sight seeing done then.

The one thing I can thing of that I would want to see in Tokyo is the Nissan museum. Which I just looked up and is just down the street from the Anpanman museum (wife wants to go see that) :o Sweet!

Are there any other good sites to visit in Osaka outside the major museums/Castle?

A tip for those of you going in the next few weeks. Some attraction sell out quick. The Ghibli one was sadly sold out for the whole time we are here.
Book ahead to avoid disappointment.

Got a reminder set to book when they go on sale for our trip. Never got to it last time we were over so we’re not missing it this time. How’s the heat Denny?

It’s ok. Yesterday was 33C with 85% humidity. I was sweating like a rapist!

It’s not too bad though. Been luck with the rain as well. Two days out of 6 with lightish showers.

I booked 3 months in advance and still didn't get my first choice of day to visit on - definitely need to book ahead for this one.

There’s a really cool and interesting digital art exhibition at the Mori building in Koto.
It’s only just opened and we missed out on it. Might be worth a look.

It absolutely threw it down here. I was at a beer garden and they were offering blankets as it was "only" about 20 degrees. This was at about 9pm.

The average summer temperature in the North of England is about 21.

It's the rainy season here at the moment. While it's not as bad as other places in Asia, you do find that there's a cycle of a really nice clear day, then a really cloudy, muggy one, then one where it just rains all day.

Last time we went we only got two days of rain. It was fabulous watching it evaporate off the pavement as it landed and we were dry a few minutes after it stopped.

If anyone else is looking to go to the Ghibli museum, I managed to pick up a ticket last time I went through Viator. They seem to buy up a few of the allocation for each day and by sheer luck one of the few days they had available was while I was there, so it's could be worth a shot.

Back home. Arrived in Manchester. Alas my cases remained in Brussels where I caught my connecting flight.
They’re being delivered today. I’ll post more detailed thoughts later but that was the greatest holiday of my life.
Amazing place.
Got to say though - June is bloody hot and humid. I think spring or autumn next time for me.

Thinking of heading to Japan again next year, picking up where I left off before and exploring more of the Kansai region; Kyoto (briefly), Osaka, Kobe and Nara, with a couple of smaller places that are of interest thrown in there as well. I'd love to go back to Tokyo and explore more of that, but I can fit that in another time. Would be looking to take things at a more relaxed pace this time and have some quieter days. What are people's thoughts on how long to spend in each place? I could do up to a month there.

It’s 38 and humid as strawberry float in Seoul. I can only imagine it being worse in Japan when we head over next week. Get yourself some cooling spray. I picked some up this morning and it’s pretty refreshing. There’s also spray for your clothes that keeps them cool.

Last Monday was the hottest day ever recorded in Japan. Was close to 40 degrees in a lot of places and was pretty bad. It dropped a little bit towards the end of the week as a typhoon approached. It barely registered in terms of wind and rain though, so it's felt a lot hotter today again. It's a few degrees cooler than last week but, but that still leaves highs of 37 or so. This is probably the hottest summer in my time here.

I must admit, and I don't want to put you all on a downer, but I wouldn't want to do the tourist stuff at this time of year. It's just too hot to be outside. There's no real respite in the shade as it's humid.

Saying that, I did do, when some friends came over in mid July three years ago. If I had to tell people on month out of the 12 not to come here though, it'd be August. The time around the Obon festival will be busy too, so if you're planning on doing anything between about the 14th-20th I would make reservations.

I'll be doing spring next time I think. The heat didn't bother me that much. But it was a good bit cooler then. The humidity was hard but the proliferation of vending machines that sell water offset it a little.
