They’re literally on every street corner! I thought that was great when I was there as I did an awful lot of wandering about, especially when I was alone during the first few days.

Parksey wrote:Last Monday was the hottest day ever recorded in Japan. Was close to 40 degrees in a lot of places and was pretty bad. It dropped a little bit towards the end of the week as a typhoon approached. It barely registered in terms of wind and rain though, so it's felt a lot hotter today again. It's a few degrees cooler than last week but, but that still leaves highs of 37 or so. This is probably the hottest summer in my time here.

I must admit, and I don't want to put you all on a downer, but I wouldn't want to do the tourist stuff at this time of year. It's just too hot to be outside. There's no real respite in the shade as it's humid.

Saying that, I did do, when some friends came over in mid July three years ago. If I had to tell people on month out of the 12 not to come here though, it'd be August. The time around the Obon festival will be busy too, so if you're planning on doing anything between about the 14th-20th I would make reservations.

I'm coming over specifically for a wrestling event and because I'm meeting my brother who is on his way home from Oz. So, I didn't really get a choice, but to be fair, we're just going to hang out and chill mostly, no arduous tourist trips.

I went in March last year, and I'd say that was perfect.

Yeah... I'm going on Tuesday. Obon festival is giving me real worries. I was intending to travel between Tokyo and Kyoto on the Saturday - but hearing that might be madness. Hoping to travel early on the Friday instead to avoid some of the crowds. Not too much planned yet - more just want to go and experience everything - geeky stuff, gundam and some traditional (deers in Nara etc). Any advice to get around Obon issues would be appreciated.

The days we intend to go to Temples we are prepared to be up and out by 6am to try and avoid crowds as much as possible.

Hey, me too!. What flight?

Just looked at the latest weather and it is predicted to calm down to 30c and cloudy on Tuesday, so I can deal with that.

I'll keep an eye out for these when I get there. I thought I'd save space packing only shorts and t-shirts this time, but I'm so worried about getting sweaty that I'll end up packing like 3 sets of clothes per day!

Any tips for things to bring etc? Doing the Japanese Rail Pass and Ninja Wifi to help us get around. And then just a crap ton of clothes we can cycle through.

Plans are starting to finalise. Tokyo --> Kyoto --> Nara --> Kobe --> Hiroshima is pretty much week one. Hoping by travelling on the Friday away from Tokyo (early in the morning) we might be able to survive Obon travel. Hope to sort tickets on the Tuesday when we arrive, but who knows.

We’ve bypassed Hiroshima and the southern part becausd of floods the other week disrupting trains. I’d check before you go.

Despite telling you all August and Obon are the hottest, sweatiest times of the year to travel, I'm now hot and sweaty awaiting the bullet train to Tokyo myself. Pray for me.

Any Grcadians still around?

Yeah we’re struggling in heat. Banjo had difficulty finding accommodation at last minute.

Drinks?

I'm considering going next year to coincide with the Rugby World Cup. See a few matches and then explore the country over a couple of weeks.

Not sure how sensible this, as I've always wanted to visit Japan, and it will no doubt be a lot busier than usual, but it's a big country and this seems like a good enough excuse to go.

Can’t be busier than tonight. Popped to Odaiba, didn’t realise there was so many events on tonight. Took 3 hours to get a train off the island.

Yeah it was easier for me to walk a couple miles and get a train than to wait for one at Odaiba. The bath I had when I got in was so rewarding.

I've actually found Tokyo strangely quiet this weekend. I guess a lot of people are visiting family etc. I went to Odaiba on Wednesday when it was pouring rain, so might give it another go.

If anyone is still there, can someone do me a huge solid and grab me some hand cream. I picked up a tiny bottle which turns out to be the best thing for my dry, crusty nursing hands. But it’s £9 a bottle online instead of ¥200.

My holiday planning for next year starts in earnest this week. Six weeks travelling round Japan, I can't wait!

Please do not post this in the "No Context" thread

Hey folks. I'm planning a trip to Japan/Korea in October 2019, with my daughter.

Seems like the cheapest option is return flights to Seoul (KLM from Edinburgh to Seoul for £721 each), then having a trip to Tokyo in the middle of the holiday (return flights Seoul > Tokyo for £210 each).

We'll have 12-13 nights in total. I'd welcome advice and recommendations. Not sure if we should keep to the 2 cities, or try to visit more places. Don't want to spend the whole time travelling, but we want to get as much out of the holiday as possible.
