Tumble Dryer Recommendations

We're looking for a tumble dryer to replace the washer-dryer that we just had removed as it kept breaking down. We've bought a washing machine but would like a dryer to go with it. The dryer will be beside the washer in a utility closet so it looks like we'll need a heat pump dryer as it isn't possible to run a vent to the outside from the utility room in our flat.

Does anyone have any recommendations for reliable tumble dryers? We're looking to spend £300-£400 but could stretch to £500 if needed.

I have a Candy condenser dryer, which has a sensor, so knows when the clothes are dry and turns itself off. Just need to empty the tank and clean the condenser after every couple of loads.

Can't go far wrong with something like this:

£4-£500 seems a bit steep for a tumble dryer. We've got an Indesit which I think cost around £250. It was actually one of those that the recall/replacement part thing applied to. Never had any issues with it though, seems to do the job.

Definitely go condenser and you can pipe them into your washer drain if its nearby so you don't have to keep emptying it.

I don't think you should be paying less than £4 for a tumble dryer.

If you want to annoy your neigbours with a constant whirring noise which penetrates the walls, just go for whatever brand degenerate neighbour bloke has.

Initial impressions are that it does the job. It just needs emptying after each cycle (the water is pumped into a separate compartment). Has loads of settings and sensors so that it dries your clothes optimally. No complaints so far but I'm far from the most informed about white goods.

This is the one I bought 7 years ago and we've had no problems with it. Water tank is a decent size and only needs emptying every 2-3 cycles. But you can pipe the water into the washer drain by just moving a pipe on the back. Think there's also an 8kg model for not much more.

I dunno if I want a tumble dryer that can be stolen from a baby though...

My only experience in this respect is brands that don't self destruct and last a while, sometimes 10+ years or electricians choose them which does not surprise me because they can (a) get parts, (b) don't really really want to come back and constantly service the things:

Brands that don't last a while:

Hotpoint, regardless of whatever strawberry floating extended bronze super gold warranty the retailer slaps on top of it (precisely because they know it will fail within 3 years). My mum bought strawberry floating 3 of these monsters. Dixons/Currys/DSG group love doing this.

It's the motors. The motors on these things often suck. As do the bearings.

You can also look at renting one instead.

Thank you everyone for the replies. Funnily enough, we had been looking at the Indesit one that Rex posted so we're likely to go with that. I hadn't heard of Indesit before so just wanted to be sure about its reliability and if there was anything better on the market.

When it comes to connecting the water from the tumble dryer condenser to the washer drain, is there a guide on how to do this and what parts are needed to link the pipes from the two machines?

On the Indesit there is a pipe running up the back of the machine to where the water collects. I believe its as simple as disconnecting at the top and feeding it into the pipe you drain your washer in to. If its not long enough then I guess you may need to figure out some way of extending it. Otherwise, emptying the drawer isn't really that onerous a task, think it holds about 5 litres.

Indensit is actually quite decent from my experience of their products. So should be fine. I would on suggest avoiding Hotpoint like the plague absolutely awful...poor quality parts such as door handles snapping.

Indesit make the hotpoint branded machines.

That shouldn't mean that hotpoint is a good as Indesit though as they would be made with different specifications, designs, parts etc

I should point out those Hotpoint machines were from like 2008 so strawberry float knows who makes what or who owns the brand etc now. I just know it wouldn't be my first choice lol

You can usually find anything plumbing wise you need from Screwfix who wil still be open (click and collect only so reserve via their website) and delivery for about £7, and their returns policy is really good. I actually bought a drainage/hose extension from them that's designed for this, albeit to run a humidifier to my lizards, it hasn't sheered or broken. You can extend/join these using a jubilee clip which basically tightens them together and a bit of gaffa tape (gorilla tape is fantastic). One end of what I got is also somewhat rubber and a flange so you can stuff some other tube in it, and a plastic hanger thing so you can attach it to a wall to let gravity do its work. A trick for fitting a tube inside a tube however is tighten the join with electrical tape and twist together. Ultimately it's a plastic tube, I wouldn't pay more than a tenner for something like that.

We have a Bosch one, I have never used it but my clothes are always dry so I assume it works well

I know this isn't what you asked but have you ever considered getting a dehumidifier?

Cheaper, both to buy and run, plus they don't damage your clothes.

Takes longer to dry stuff (unless you combo it with a radiator) so if you're a large household I can understand why you'd need a tumble drier, but for 2/3 people I've found it great.

We just air dry stuff with a fan too, 2 person household.
