The Neo Geo version was probably also in the "Hmmn..." category whilst the upcoming MD one looks destined to be "good".

The PC Engine is interesting as it's a highly regarded system (by gamers of a certain vintage) and it hasn't been widely available before. There are some seriously hardcore PCE fans out there! As I said, though, I can't imagine a mini version... it was already incredibly small for a console :o .

That's not strictly true. It might have closed down now but a lot of the PC Engine's best games were available for download via Virtual Console for the original Wii.

Well, if there's a market for this then there's a market for Saturn Mini and Dreamcast Mini.

These consoles getting the mini treatment is all well and good but I want a decent Spectrum mini to be released - the 80s home computer revolution needs to be represented!

Won't the Spectrum Next kinda have that covered?

Possibly. I know there have been a few attempts at releasing new/mini/portable Spectrum versions but my understanding was that most of them had been pretty terrible so far!

I had a go on the Spectrum Next at Play Expo Glasgow. I know it's gonna have new software (I sampled the new Horace game) but I assume it'll support emulation too.

When is this mini-console craze going to stop? I bet most people don't even play the games, they are just buying them for the nostalgia.

*last week I connected my SNES mini to my computer TV for in-between work gaming.
*back in the old days when I used to read EDGE et al, PC Engine was a premium console of desire that was too expensive for me to realistically afford. There's a part of me that wants to buy this as a gift for my younger self who was so full of hopes and dreams. :|

You all know what time it is where retro console classics are concerned.

That's right, it's 3DO'clock. :datass:

Is there a reason why the US version was twice as big as the EU and JP models?

Literally because they wanted to make the console look more macho for the US market  .

Was the TurboGrafx/PC Engine ever officially released in PAL territories? Info on the matter is sketchy if memory serves.

Nah, it never gained an official release. Games mags of the time raved over it and it does seem odd that it didn't arrive here.

Wikipedia suggests the TurboGrafx (without the 16) had a limited release in UK and Spain and the PC Engine had a limited release in France but I certainly never saw one.

First I knew of the system existing was a machine being given away as a prize on a Saturday morning kids show... I forget which one.

Yeah, I just looked that up on Wikipedia. I'm not sure that it did get a UK release... I don't recall ever seeing one or being aware that it had released, and the game mags of the time only mentioned it in the context of imported consoles. Rather odd!

Edit: Tracked down this info on the Computing History UK website:

A planned European launch was largely abandoned, there was a limited launch in France of the original machine with a PAl Modulator.
