I heard the story about Amazon instantly (or, within five days) charging for pre-orders but is it actually happening?

I've ordered mine this morning, and there was no specific message that said it would be charged immediately – I'll let you know if they take the money in the next week or so.

I thought they scrapped the plan to charge preorders immediately because of the big backlash?

I pre-ordered it there and it didn't take anything. Terms and conditions still refer to payment on dispatch.

I couldn't see a way to pre-order it, apart from other sellers for over £300.

Hang on - I must have mis-read something because it is included! Even so, I haven't pre-ordered and probably won't do so; it does look cool but I know that I'll play it for ten minutes and then put it in a cupboard. That's more on me than the quality of the system, though.

Right... I must have had a mad five minutes or so. Devil Crash isn't included :( . The slighter weaker Alien Crush is, though.

I accidentally ordered one of the PC Engine ones from Japan. I don't need it, but whatever I want it.

What's with having Parasol Stars but no Rainbow Islands?

The NewZealand Story would have been nice too, no idea what the PC Engine version was like, but I loved that game on Amiga.

It's a pretty strange mix of titles. Especially since (If I'm right), there is both the Japanese and English versions of Ys I & II included.

My main hope is that it's hackable. Not because I want to add anything onto it, mostly just to tweak some of the Japanese versions to use English translations. Snatcher for example is going to be pretty much unplayable if you can't speak Japanese. I'm hoping it'll motivate some fan translations for it, even if it's just based on the Mega CD version.

I am still resisting pre-ordering this. In my opinion it looks to be a nice design and it feels tough to gripe about 50-odd games... but the game choices - and the Japan-only text ones - aren't quite pulling me in yet.

A big part of it for me is that I know I'll probably never have a real PC Engine of my own, so this is a good way to have official hardware and a good chunk of the library. As far as I can tell, from the Japanese only games there's only around 4/5 that will be pretty much unplayable. The rest should be something that can be dealt with. It's mostly because the system is such a great source of shooters and quirky weird stuff that I'm interested.

Yeah, good points. I've never played on a PC Engine (beyond of a couple of emulated titles on the Wii Virtual Console) but I was always intrigued by the system and its games when I read about them in mags like C&VG and The Games Machine back in the late 80s and early 90s.

I have held off from mini consoles like the SNES and MD because I kinda think I'd prefer to play on my existing kit... but that ain't gonna happen with the PCe!

I keep veering between being excited about this, and then telling myself not to be so stupid. Splatterhouse got me excited again, but then I remembered I have it on the virtual console and it wasn't as AMAZING as I'd remembered compared to when I was a kid.

Likewise, excited for the megadrive mini, but then I remember I've got the megadrive collection on Switch which has many of the same games. So umming and ahhing over that too, but trying to resist.

Then again ... I do love these mini consoles. Far from using them as a brief novelty, I think I'm one of the few people using the playstation classic as much as my PS4 right now. Keep it plugged into a small TV in the spare room (along with the SNES classic) and often find myself sneaking in there for a ten minute blast, which then easily turns into an hour.

Never had the TurboGrafx / PC engine first time around either, so that's a bit of a draw.

No. Must be strong.

One other factor that's contributing to me picking these mini-systems up is that I emulate an absolute ton of games. This is my way of giving something back for some of these games and encouraging the modern retro scene.

Actually that's a good way of looking at it. Since you can only get these originals second hand, it's the only way to give some of these companies money for these games.

I think it's really interesting to see them realise there is a value in their back catalogues. I hope this one does well, but it's hard to guess as it doesn't have the name recognition outside of hardcore gamers.

I'm not sure if it being Amazon exclusive is a recognition that it's niche and hard to sell in stores to the casual buyer, or a reflection that there are hardly any stores any more in the first place.

Just read an article about the mini system and the games in the new edition of Retro Gamer mag. It looks great and I have placed a pre-order.

Can't really afford it and might cancel later.

One odd thought, though; it comes with a USB power cable but it's unclear as to whether that includes a plug. I wonder if any USB power plug would work? (I'd have to buy one).

The mini SNES and I think the mini PS1 didn't come with 3-pin plugs in the box. Any USB plug should work if there isn't one included. You might be able to just plug it into a USB port on your TV, that's how I have my SNES set up. Just make sure you don't turn off your TV while you're playing!
