PostTwo old music-based PC games - what were they?
by Herdanos » Wed Apr 28, 2021 10:09 am

I'm trying to recall the names (and confirm the existence :slol: ) of two music-based PC games that I played in my youth. I never owned either of them, but played them at friends' houses.

The first must have been released in the mid/late 90s. The goal was to create a band that would release a single, and the game would tell you where in the charts your single would appear. You'd need to recruit individual band members, name the group, and record the single, and then the game would assess your efforts and tell you where the song charted.

The second was from around the millennium or early 00s. Visually it was row-based; the goal was to create a piece of music, but you could create your track using prerecorded pieces of other music. I now know it was kind of like a hugely simplified Abelton or Audacity, but extremely colourful and with a focus on using the existing available nudging music samples, rather than recording your own (I don't actually recall whether this was possible). I also have a vague memory (possibly incorrectly) of this game disc being made available as a freebie with a UK cereal, though this could be totally inaccurate.

Can anyone name either of these games?

The second one could also be any of the EJay games.

The first one sounds like A Rockstar Ate my Hamster. If you look on my YouTube I did an Amiga review of that game so if you look at that it will help you work out if that's it or not

Damn, I was really hoping "racking my brain on an entirely music based game released around the millennium, i.e the year 2000" would end up as Music 2000, akin to your search for a Pokémon guide turning out to be the official Pokémon guide.

I've been wondering about these two games for years but held off asking for fear of a similar outcome.

It's definitely not ARAMH but the game I recall had a more cartoony vibe than Rock Manager. I wonder if there was a cheap knock-off of RM?

I nearly bought the INXS one, for the novelty of the video editing, but couldn’t get past the fact I didn’t really like the band much.

Gutted that I was wrong when I was so sure of my correctness.

Music 2000 was so good. Although I think I had that one on PlayStation

I remember the shareware version of Dance eJay being on EVERY PC Gamer cover disc for about three years, and every time I installed it I could only ever make a song based around two vocal samples: "YEAH!" and "WHOA-OHOHHHH"

Maybe that's the version I'm thinking of and it was free with a magazine rather than a pack of cereal...

eJay was fresh

"It should be common sense to just accept the message Nintendo are sending out through their actions."

This thread has reminded me of the existence of Rock Manager. I loved that back in the day.
