Ubisoft is making a new Star Wars open world game!

EA had an exclusive contract but Disney is now partnering with other companies. Disney Infinity was aimed at a younger audience but gave a good hint of what can be achieved. This may well be Assassin's Creed Star Wars! I hope that tomorrow Lucasfilm games announce a partnership with a company to make a Star Wars RPG.

TODAY, LUCASFILM GAMES announced that it’s entering a partnership with Ubisoft to create an open-world Star Wars game. The title will be developed by Ubisoft’s Massive Entertainment, marking the first time that a company outside of EA has produced a Star Wars game since Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012, ending nearly eight years of exclusivity. Also in the works is a new Indiana Jones game, to be developed by Bethesda Game Studios, a newcomer to Lucasfilm’s and Disney’s properties.

Let’s start with Star Wars. Development on this new title is still very early—Massive is still recruiting for the project even—so details are sparse. Julian Gerighty, director of The Division 2 and The Crew, will serve as the game’s creative director, and the title will use Massive’s Snowdrop engine. Beyond that, Lucasfilm Games hasn’t revealed anything about the characters or settings within the Star Wars universe that the game will feature.

This announcement follows yesterday’s news that Lucasfilm is partnering with Bethesda to create an Indiana Jones title, the first non-Star Wars AAA game out of Lucasfilm in years. The move marks a seismic shift for Lucasfilm’s approach to gaming, widening the tent for developers that want to create games using Lucasfilm franchises, particularly in the Star Wars universe.

While EA had previously suggested that the company would have exclusivity on Star Wars games for 10 years, it seems like either that was misstated or the clock has run out early. (Lucasfilm would not confirm for WIRED either way.) Regardless, EA will keep making games in the future, but Lucasfilm Games is free to seek other partners.

“EA has been and will continue to be a very strategic and important partner for us now and going forward,” Sean Shoptaw, senior vice president of Global Games and Interactive Experiences at Disney, told WIRED. “But we did feel like there's room for others.”

Very happy with that!
Gutted that 1313 got cancelled, would like someone to maybe pick that back up.

It's not an exclusive deal like EAs was though. And Massive make good gooseberry fool.

Double posts :dread:

EDIT: I saw that, Jen :capnscotty:

Just hope it's not Ass Creed style open world where it's "X times larger" than the previous games as though that's a useful indication of quality

If they took the template from Starlink, removed the Toys, set it in one system and let you get out of the ship to explore you would have a goldmine.

The sense of the full article, and in light of yesterday's news about partnering with Machine Games / Bethesda, is that Disney will work with multiple publishers who have strengths that lend themselves to a particular license.
EA had the license since 2012 and it feels like they've squandered it. The Visceral Game led by Uncharted creator Amy Hennig had potential and apparently was quite far in development. EA have only release one full single player Star Wars game?! Crazy. If I was in charge I would have greenlit an RPG and open world straight away.

And expanded the dancing section of Kinect Star Wars into a full game.

Tremendous news! I like openworld games and Massive's snowdrop engine is pretty impressive. There's huge potential in an openworld Star Wars game and I'd love it if Massive can capture the same vibe that appears in The Mandalorian (i.e. great use of classic characters in fresh situations).

The biggest problem with the idea of open world Star Wars game is the scale of it. Either it's limited in region, which means only having one or two of the franchise's iconic locations featured, or things will be scaled down to not feel accurate to the source material. That or you don't make it truly open world and more like Mass Effect, but I don't think that'd get announced as "open world" or align particularly with the games Ubisoft makes.

Not the worst idea! That or they need to make some money back from all their Beyond Good and Evil 2 tech investment, that promised huge planets with cities to explore and space exploration with ships to fly.

Honestly I’m really happy they don’t seem to be chasing an exclusive deal with one developer now like EA for example. I’ve not played an open world from Ubisoft in a while until Valhalla but seems to take a good approach to it so I’m kind of hopeful to see what this could be like, much like with the Indiana Jones game announced yesterday.

Either way, seems like Lucas Film Games are moving in what could be a better direction.

This could be amazing. Currently playing immortal femnix rousing monster gods, and something like that mixed with that fallen Jedi game would be good.

In before imperial data towers.

Immatirials Farriz rousing has Ubisoft towers in the form of god statues, but to see the icons covering the map you need to scan for them in first person, which I can see whatever this ends up being using the binocular thing like uses in star wars to look at the banthas.

Please be a mandalorian game.

They'd make even more if they kept the toys in though...

This is what I was hoping for back when the restructuring first happened when Disney bought LucasFilm. Plenty of games from plenty of developers in a range of styles and genres. I will look forward to seeing more of this, and of the other announcements soon to come from other developers - and EA's newest stuff.
