Seeing a lot of chatter that Ubisoft have started revoking licences for The Crew after turning off the servers.
So if you owned it you can't even download it now (I believe this is via Uplay but not sure where else).
I've seen some speculation that it's to prevent the community figuring out some kind of offline patch.
Utter scumbags.

Something quite apt that the team developing Rogue Prince of Persia for Ubisoft are named 'Evil Empire'

It really is a horrible move by Ubisoft. I bought The Crew and The Crew 2 but - because of the poorly-handled closure of The Crew - no way am I buying the third entry.

Got home and just checked and yeah, my copy of The Crew says "You no longer have access to this game. Why not check the Store to pursue your adventures?"
Get strawberry floated you thieving banana splits.
That said I have no memory of buying most of the games in my Uplay library. Think a lot of them come from bundles and linking to my console accounts (Which will sometimes give you the PC version for free).

I've seen the "the community might keep it going with private servers" argument but that was never going to happen; was there a big enough community left still playing it?
Also if the licenses for the cars/music have expired if anyone carried on trying to maintain the game that ubisoft made with those in, I imagine it would be up to Ubisoft to police that because they would legally get it in the neck if it was still around beyond the prescribed period, so would lawyer up instantly if someone tried; no goodwill private server thing like with city of heroes.
I'm absolutely not defending Ubisoft here, but with the context of the crew specifically being shut down due to licenses and probably dwindling player numbers not worth them maintaining the server infrastructure, once the game is down whether it's in your library or not makes no difference.
I wish I could remember it but I read some article about how a lot of the problem with maintaining older game servers is the security aspect; i.e. keeping them up to date to stop people using them as ways to get into players' machines, and is not worth the legal or practical hassle, especially for "dead games".

Realised I was thinking of 'The Club' from 2008 - I was amazed it was still going!
I dunno, 10 years for an online only game doesn't seem horrendous, but it's still weird they didn't allow fan-run private servers.

The Club was good fun. I'd love to replay that.

https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/659071/Petition going around to try and enforce companies to keep games in a somewhat playable state after taking your money. I don't trust any of the current or prospective UK governments to do anything about it, but I guess it doesn't hurt to get it mentioned.

Doesn't it say buried in the EULA for most online games that by agreeing to it the publishers can change or switch it off whenever they like?
See my previous point about licenses and the security of server infrastructure for "dead" games; once they have your money and whatever licenses they have to use in turn have expired thats it, game over. It's not good, but that's how things are. These kinds of petitions are incredibly naive but if people feel like they're doing something then good for them I guess.
