More than 93,000 suspected violent criminals and sex offenders have been released without restrictions by police in England and Wales since 2017, figures obtained by BBC Newsnight show.

People suspected of offences including rape and murder have been among those "Released Under Investigation" (RUI).

Richard Miller of the Law Society said a "major scandal" was brewing over the way RUIs are being used.

The Home Office said the cases must be regularly reviewed and managed.

In 2017, the rules on pre-charge bail changed, making it more difficult for police to keep suspects on bail beyond 28 days.

The overuse of RUIs, Mr Miller said, is the unintended consequence of the changes.

He's not going to do it is he? The closer to election we get, the worse it will be.

BBC have a bit of an issue seeing as they seemingly sold Corbyn on the interview by saying Boris had agreed.

Grilled by Phil and Holly, though. Facing the scrutiny.

I don’t see a problem with Andrew Neil interviewing everyone else but not Boris. I still want to hear what the other candidates have to say, and grilled under conditions many other interviewers aren’t capable of delivering. If Boris doesn’t want to do it then that reflects badly on him. His cowardice in this instance shouldn’t then dictate we then automatically can’t watch other politicians face the music. See also the climate change debate on C4.

Corbyn and Boris also didn’t want to attend the ITV debate on Sunday night, despite everyone else turning up.

Why take one solitary sentence out of context?

It wasn’t out of context and that view was the one I wanted to single out.

There’s a massive problem if Johnson refuses to do an interview that all the other candidates have agreed to do. Especially when it looks like the others agreed because they thought Johnson agreed and when he’s indicated he was going to do it.

This explains why so many people don't understand how to use the No Context Thread properly.

So you’d rather have no interviews just because Boris is refusing to do it? How does that benefit anyone?

The problem is with Boris himself, not with the interviews existing.

So there’s no issue with Andrew Neil interviewing everyone else, then.

Well there is a rather big issue if the Prime Minister is avoiding the interview that everybody else is doing.

The problem is that candidates will only do adversarial interviews like that if they all agree. No politician wants to get grilled by Neil, you do it because you think your opponents will come off worse.

Having managed to get his opponents to do it, Johnson refusing to do it hurts him much less, comparatively, than doing it. But it undermines the principle of that kind of scrutiny, so the BBC absolutely should turn the screws on him to force him on.

They should really cut down on the coverage he gets until he goes on. Otherwise he's just taking advantage and getting away with it.

EDIT: Or empty-chair him and have Neil shout at a pot plant.

That test just serves to remind me how obsessively I have followed this election campaign, because for each category I can always easily identify which party is which  :fp:.

The Lib Dem part didn’t really bother me, but where the strawberry float did the Brexit Party score come from?
